PE Operations Team

Hi,
Can someone tell me about PE Operations Team for post-mba career? I have an interview coming for the operations division.
What do you think about it compared to the deal team?
What does the exit like for the ops team?
How about the compensation compared to the deal guys?

Thanks.

It's a good gig, often similar to the work you'd do in MBB consulting except that you actually own the company.

Beyond that, you're going to have to be more specific on your firm. (feel free to PM me). Comp varies between firms, at places like KKR I think the comp is roughly on par with the deal team, though often times it comes down to the mechanics of a particular deal - if the ops guys aren't used extensively, they're not goign to get an equal cut of carry. All in, it's certainly more than what you would make at an MBB during the mid-later stages career wise.

Not sure what to say regarding exit opps. Usually stuff like this is the exit people are looking for.

Thanks 09grad,

So will I be expecting more like a case interview for a position in the operations team? I do realize that the job role would be similar to MBB.

I can only say that it's the Asian arm of TPG. I was getting the impression that in a PE firm, the operations team would be like a secondary entity (as in jobs, comps, etc) to the deal team, hence my question above.

As regarding the exit opps, I was wondering what ppl will do after ~5-10 years in this position, will they really stay that long or go somewhere else....

Thanks.

Hey TPG has a very well developed operations group. They are top notch and I know that in the US they work very closely with the deal team.

Deal teams are still the "prom queens" of PE firms. PE firms are, after all, investment companies, but given the fundamentals for the PE industry now and in the future, this is changing rapidly.

Not sure about what the itnerview is like to be honest at TPG.

Maybe we can talk more via PM?

Hey, I tried to PM you but it said I dont have enough bananas......anyway thanks for your insights.

Also, regarding the exit opps. It's an intersting question. Honestly most portfolio ops teams haven't been around in any extensive capacity for more than 10 years, so there isn't really a history of prior employees to look at. I think it's an interesting place to be. Most teams are relatively new and you are sort of at the forefront of how the PE industry is changing. Megafunds these days are relying heavily on their ops gorups to extract value from the companies they buy.
