Search Tips

I was wondering if anyone out there knows – if there is actually a way – how to create forum targeted searches; what is the syntax? For example: if I wanted to search threads in the Business School Barrage in the Ask Alex MBA thread for GPA questions, how would I go about this? Also, are there any other search items that are good to know?

Thanks

well you can search on google for example. Question is what is the average age of an investment banker.

Type into google "what is the average age of an investment banker site: wallstreetoasis.com and it will only give you links from this site...

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

I often find goole to be the best way to search WSO as well, however, it still does not solve my problem. There are tons of pages for some of the popular threads – it would be nice if you could actually search the thread rather than reading through all of the comments.

the problem with that is patrick would have to implement a way to rate comments....

I was thinking of somehow being able to access or organize a search like below:

  1. WSO
    1. Business School Barrage
      1. Ask Alex about MBA
        1. Search for "GPA"

Is this what you're imagining? A rating system is required to do this?

don't know why a rating system would be required for that, but we don't get that granular and I am not sure we could do that without a ton of work.

What you can do is use the search we have which is actually pretty powerful (with the multi-faceted search now, I would say better than google). After you search on WSO, you can see there are blocks on the right column that can help you filter your search. So if you searched "GPA" you would get all threads in every forum.

Then you could click the Biz School Barrage filter on the right and only get discussions discussing GPA in the Biz School forum. After that, you can always use "control-F" in your browser once you are in a discussion to find the word "GPA"...

does that help?

Yeah, that helps, thanks man – the only thing that I have not been able to figure out how with the existing search function is how to filter by thread, any ideas?.

I think i mis understood, I thought you were asking looking for specific comments that gave the best information

Basically I want to search the Ask Alex and Stacy Blackman threads and have not found a way to do this directly. I could control f it, however, with multiple pages, it's cumbersome.

good point...there are about 9-10 pages on those threads...those are really the exception though. we could make it so there are 100 comments before a thread begins to paginate, but that may cause a lot of scrolling.

not sure what we can do here...
