Settling a retarded "prestige" issue bet

Magna cum Laude vs. Summa cum Laude: does it matter? both check the box, right? so an applicant with one has 0 advantage from this over another, if they are from the same target?

Not to sound defensive but Magna > Summa in the sense that the person was not a total grade whore.

So I take it you got magna and your friend got summa and you want us to re-inflate your ego by saying you did a better job by going out more nights than he did and not working as hard?

Can't help you there, but I will say applying to graduate schools summa v magna makes a difference and applying to jobs it makes a marginal difference, its binary like you alluded to in your post, but by no means is some recruiter gonna say "Oh what a chill dude he was only magna meaning he balances the perfect amount of chill ballerness and work ethic, natty lights and Incubus for everyone."

I don't think it makes a difference what so ever. I screened resumes for my bank. In the 30 seconds or so spent reviewing a resume before putting them in the yes or no pile, you glance at the gpa and mentally check yes or no. I never differentiated between and level. Its binary. One you are in the interview stage gpa doesn't matter at all. Fit and interview performance are what dictate who gets the job.

I've seen schools that had only cum laude. No magna, no summa. Fair? And I'm sure that at some lesser schools, summa cum laude is a meaningless embellishment. It's all about who the competition was.
