Should you tell your current employer you are looking for a summer internship?
I did a forum search and nothing came up,
So I am current at an part time banking internship, small place, not a lot of work, grunt work mostly, pay is okay
I wouldnt mind working here for the summer but obviously I want to apply to better places.
So should I give my current employer a heads up? Just in case people contact him for references? I still want to work here after the summer if it is at all possible because it is the best fit for a part time internship for me, due to various factors such as transportation, schedule, etc.
Thoughts?
Thanks
If you are doing a part time banking internship, then is it not expected that you would be doing some recruiting. Unless they expect you to be an intern there forever, they ought to offer you a full time job or be respectful of your recruiting needs. Hell, they ought to actually help you out damn it!
I wouldn't worry about it at all. Unless they've outright asked "will you be here during summer?" and you responded in the affirmative, there's no reason this should be an issue. I'm sure they've had other interns in the past that left them for other summer internships. Furthermore, I seriously doubt anyone will be calling for references at the SA level.
Hope that helps.
Don't worry about it. Just apply for SA positions and wait for the right time to tell your boss.
In my opinion, the right time to tell you boss would be when you receive an offer for an SA position. After all, most banks only check references AFTER you got your offer. And frankly, for SA positions, I don't think they check it.
Good luck!
