Silly question but probably easy answer from you
Hi fellow WSO-ers,
I have a silly question for you all. I say silly because the answer will be probably obvious to most of you (if not all) and that's what I'm counting on.
Just moved to the US from France for personal reasons. Here I am, having missed all the recruiting deadlines waiting for my green card to go through. It's not so bad though, since I have to adjust to my new environment now.
I want to be ready for the next recruiting frenzy this fall. My interests are large but my focus would be more toward Technology and Clean Tech (good sectors for someone based in SF, right?). I want to gain more in-depth knowledge for these sectors in the US. Where should I look? WSJ is a given. So is Deloitte's Market Insights. Other ideas? Sector-specific trade journals? Blogs? Daily or weekly papers?
Really appreciate your help! I'm sure you've had lots of experiences and reading hours with such sources.
P.S.: if question already addressed somewhere, please send me the link.
Whats your background?
My background in a nutshell: - Long-term internship (8 month) in really small advisory firm in Paris in 2010: did valuation (DCF, comps), prepared deals documents, for one small sell-side mandate and 3 Private Placements - BA, Master's in Corporate Finance (France, both) - non-Ivy League obviously - Previously: two non-IBanking related internships in the US in solar project development and finance (16 months total)
My background is not "ideal" to make my resume stand out with the big banks and boutiques, but I feel I could have a chance.
I am interested in M&A rather than ECM/DCM.
Your solar project development internships will make you stand out.
Relaunching my question. This forum has so many active members that my post got lost down the drain. Haha. Love it, I could spend hours reading all the topics. Anyway, still looking for help. Thanks!
I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to get prepared for. If it is interviewing, then you need to read the WSJ (of course, like you said) and have an opinion on the markets. From there follow the key tech stocks, see if the are doing deals (dealbook) and if you can find one or two specific ones that you have a real interest in, that is also good.
As a caution, you are putting yourself at risk. It's great that you love Tech/Clean energy, more power to you. However, if you get into an interview and say you really like tech, then they start asking questions about the subject and you are not able to intelligently talk about the subject, you're screwed. So, in conclusion, be prepared. (FYI, you can never prepare enough).
There has to be tech/clean energy news letters out there. I would try searching on google (sorry, seems obvious but not everyone does it). If you have a passion for the industry, it makes it a lot easier to follow what is going on so I hope that is the case.
Good luck.
Koho: Thank you for your response. I see your point and the danger of saying I like specific sectors as I will draw attention to those and call for more pointed questions. What kind of sector-related questions should I expect in an interview (let's say I have not stated I like a sector more than another)? If they ask which sectors I follow / like, how do you recommend I answer so as not to shoot me in the foot then and risk them asking difficult and specific questions?
turtles: thanks also for your comment, I am indeed counting on my previous internships to make me "stand out", as in have a different background that could catch the attention.
