Specific resume question (Now with resume attached)
Hello,
I am 29 and already I am having trouble fitting all of my work experience on one page. After under grad my first position was at JPMorgan. Afterwards I went on to work at other banks (Lehman) and now a PE firm in SF. However, I was also an intel officer in the USMC.
Now the military experience isn't as pertinent to the positions I am applying to (PE/VC) as is the banking experience. However, in many of the interviews it feels as if we spend a good amount of the time speaking about my military experience. Also, my thought process is, everyone (applying to these positions) has gone to Harvard, Stanford, or Wharton, and everyone has big bank / transaction experience.
So what sets me apart from other applicants? Scuba school in Coronado, Jump school in Ft. Benning, SERE school in Okinawa...etc. I want to stick out in the interviewer's mind, and not just be another candidate.
Another option I was thinking about was to decrease my over all bullets per position. Currently I have about 5 per (some bullets require two lines). I was thinking maybe I could shorten that to 3 per, and stick both the USMC and JPM in there. However, this isn't as easy since, even 5 bullets are not enough. "Selected Transactions" take up two lines per position alone.
Any ways, I wasn't giving this much thought until an interview last week. It was a lunch interview with a MD, and as I was going through my background (he was following along my resume), he stopped me at JPM and asked why it wasn't listed on my resume. And, it felt as if he was slightly suspicious; maybe just in my head (technical round this week). Any advise would be appreciated from VPs, Directors and above.
Thank you

I agree with the idea about leaving the Marine officer part on –no matter what stage of your career you’re in, that line will hold gravitas and set you apart. I think you could make it just a line or two if you desired. For example, take out the Marine security guard bullet.
Just from a straight formatting perspective, there is a lot of white space. I think you could remove all the room between the bullets of the same section/job. Perhaps use the default 1.15 line spacing found in Word? That should buy you some room.
I’ll try to circle back and offer thoughts on other points I noticed, but it’s obvious your professional and academic history speaks for itself.
