Sun Capital Partners (Boca Raton, FL)

Does anybody know anything about Sun Capital Partners out of Boca Raton, Fl?

I assume they are a boutique firm, they have all of their Associates, VP's, and MD's profiles posted on their site, of course 95% of the people at the firm are from Top 20 schools, so I thought that said something about the firm, I'm just trying to find out what's the reputation, how's the deal flow, and what's normally the ropes of getting into a a more regional firm such as Sun Cap Partners? If any of you guys have any knowledge at all about them, feel free to pass it along, Thanks

They do a lot of middle market business - Like to buy into distressed businesses that they think they can turn around

Sun is a bottom feeder in terms of investments. They loved distressed and often bid low to win. Good group though, rather large fund that focuses in the middle market.

WalMartShopperSo are they hiring?

I'm not sure if Sun Capital Partners is hiring, but you can view any new job postings they might list on their Glass Door Page. Here's a link to their page: http://www.glassdoor.com/Overview/Working-at-Sun-Capital-Partners-EI_IE… Doesn't look like they have any active listings, but you never know.

That will at least give you a starting point of where to look if they post any new jobs. Hope that helps!

Disclaimer: this is solely my opinion/impression. If it helps, I was very high on Sun Cap when I was doing my initial screen. Really liked the distressed focus/contrarian investment philosophy.

I went through PE recruiting pretty recently and I specifically remember the conversation I had about Sun Cap with the MD at my bank that 'covers' them/colleagues that have worked with them before. What I was told is that Sun Cap is not a great place for a junior person to be at. The line that sticks with me is 'everything about them seems like a fly by night operation with no stability'. Their philosophy with investments (quantity over quality) also applies to their junior resources. Turnover is apparently pretty high and the culture is not great. If you're looking for a place that will legitimately take an interest in your career/you as a person, this is probably not it. However, I will say that there are certainly people who do well coming from a place like this. I'm sure there are people that have fit in well there and have good things to say, but hopefully this is useful as a data point.

This is all second hand info from one of the partners at my firm, so take it with a grain of salt. However, the source is quite credible.

Sun generates extremely good returns. If they're not industry-leading for their fund size, they're pretty close. The firm is known for its hard-core operational focus and their ability to add post-close value. They're more of an ops-focused culture than a brainiac think tank.

I cannot confirm this 100%, but I've heard their cash pay scale is very low, 1/2 to 1/3 market for their partners. Not sure what it looks like for their junior folks, but I doubt it's that much of a haircut to market. They have many more professionals than their peer firms and hire lots of operating talent. However, they more than make up for any difference in cash comp with carry given their track record of returns.

I don't know much about pay at Sun Capital but their reputation is solid. They have done a lot of deals in the consumer/retail space and have developed a reputation as one of best in this area. They have had a lot of success historically leading to high investor interest -- I believe their last fund was upsized and still oversubscribed.

The comment about pay above seems surprising to me. I think their early vintage funds were small which might explain the lower pay (on an absolute basis) compared to bigger funds however their latest fund is over $1 billion and should provide plenty of fee revenue to pay people well. And if they continue to deliver the returns the cash register will keep on ringing.
