UK work visa via marriage

Does anyone here have experience/knowledge of what the process is like if a US citizen marries a UK citizen and wants to work in the UK?

Situation is basically my girlfriend (UK citizen) and I (US citizen) want to work/live in London but it's damn difficult for me to get visa sponsorship to work because of the new UK visa rules.

We've concluded that marriage is probably the best route for us to be able to stay together in the same country and for me to find a good job in London, so we're working on getting married on paper as soon as possible either in Italy where we currently live or in the US.

Question is basically what is the process like, once married, to get a work permit in London (procedure, timeframes, etc). The UK Border Agency site is a bit vague - only mentions 'living' and nothing about 'working' - so any guidance here from knowledgable/experienced folks would be appreciated.

I am assuming this http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigrati… is the correct page, and that the visa permits one to work (not just live) in the UK, but I want to make sure.

Thanks
