I'm looking to begin to explore my options for a job in the private equity real estate world. I am looking to go to a shop that invests in all types of real estate assets so that I can get a better background on RE investing before i specialize (ie. development/distressed assets/stabilized assets). I was hoping that members on here could provide me with a little bit of help as to what shops would be the best to work for in order to get a great background on real estate investing in all assets types/investment strategies. Any help would be appreciated.
MSREI: You will spend your time working half on opportunistic REPE and half on core. Great shop, second only to BX in opportunistic REPE. Wrecked in crisis, new fund still raised quite a few billion. Overall still a great REPE megafund.
BX: 40% IRR gross of fees on all REPE funds... Abso-fucking-lutely legends. Buffet probably could have gotten these returns if he levered up to 70% on all of his buyouts.
Most other megafunds have some allocation to REPE but some are more corporate based (KKR).
Best way to break in is through REIB or another REPE shop.
Is there anyone that can comment on the interview process? Typical questions (e.g., technical or macro perspectives on market) or are they worried more about general fit
Anyone heard of Westport Capital Partners? Any advice?
To answer your question "Any advice?", I'm not sure what kind of advice you're requesting specifically, so in this case my advice to you = "kill self"
I've done deals with both BX and TPG RE, and both shops are top notch. TPG just got a great team from DB recently.
vl229, without divulging too much, what was the nature of your deals with BX and TPG? Would be interested to know how they structure their deals. Thanks.
Lulz prospie doesn't like repeating himself (herself??). Here's the Westport thread

Info on Blackstone: http://ir.blackstone.com/files/doc_presentations/2014/2014%20BX%20Inves…
TPG is currently growing their team. Smart people, good pay, but lots of work.
Go with Blackstone.

Does anyone have a list of the top US real estate private equity firms in the US?

http://www.privateequityrealestate.net/resources/PERE%2030/PERE_30_Exec…] ah, LBREP, Citi Property Investors... those were the good old days
Here's the 2011 standings, ranked by amount of capital raised on a trailing 5 year basis.
I'm surprised that JP Morgan isn't on the list. Is it categorized as something else?
I think PERE does a ranking of the top 50 REPE - you'll be able to find it by googling
Does anyone know the names of the top 5 quite/very lean, but "doing big things" real estate private equity shops in NYC? (Originally Posted: 12/19/2013)
That, and the name of the top 5 luxury townhouse developers in Manhattan and the Top 5 Hotel Acquisition/Repostion/Disposition groups. Excuse the jumbled format of my post since am writing this from my phone. Thanks.
toll brothers has to be up there.. dont know how "lean" their operation is though
Naftali and Extell are decent
Fisher Brothers and JD Carlisle come to mind and under the radar but very involved.
JD Carlisle could be the most "under the radar" developer in NYC that does big projects and owns quite a bit.
Hotel - HEI and Crescent are pretty involved and own several in NYC.
chetrit
Chetrit sure isnt "quiet"
