FAQ: Will a minor help me land an offer?

A minor alone will not help you land an offer, however, it can help pull your story together. If you enjoy chemistry and decided to do your major in that, picking up a minor in business can help show your interest in the field. Conversely, if you are a business major who wants to work for a boutique IB focused on medicine, having a minor in chemistry will help show that it truly interests you and you have some context to put the work in. It can also work in your favor by allowing you to connect with a larger group of people. If you minored in German, anyone reviewing your resume is going to have a connection to you and that may earn you an interview.

The biggest issue with a minor is that it could actually hurt you. If you are an economics major and pick a minor in math, you're going to be in for a rough ride. Due to the difficulty of math classes, and the fact that you're in classes with math majors (some of which will be graded on a curve), you're likely to see your GPA drop. While it's nice that you have that extra little something on your diploma and resume, it's not going to make a difference to the majority of people.

Do not bank on a minor to help you get a job. It can be helpful, but it's not nearly as important as your major, GPA, internships, and extracurricular activities.
