Bonus Bananas April 26, 2013
1) Algo Trading Saves Mark Cuban Millions During "Twitter Twitch" (Streambase Event Processing Blog) - Maybe all those bots running around the exchange aren't such a bad thing after all, Pretty interesting analysis of the recent AP-driven Twitter Twitch and the negligible effect it had on investors.
2) Millionaires Clash Over Socialite’s Child Support Claims (Dealbook) - This is just ugly all day and is a pretty clear violation of the time-honored "Bros before Hos" code. If you're looking for yet another reason to remain single, and especially why you never want to marry a fellow banker (or anyone even tangentially related to the industry), this is it.
3) SEC Seeks to Halt Scheme Raising Investor Funds Under Guise of JOBS Act (SEC) - If they'd quit dicking around and just get the JOBS Act passed already, the regulators could devote adequate resources to weeding out shysters like this. C'mon guys, get something done and quit putting the cart before the horse.
4) Return and Ridicule (AVC) - Great perspective by legendary venture capitalist Fred Wilson. He talks about the correlation between how ridiculous people consider a start-up company and how much money he's eventually made on it. Short version: if you think a company is stupid you should shut up about it because you're probably wrong.
5) Lerer Ventures’ Summer School VC aims to help college students become entrepreneurs and investors (The Next Web) - If you don't have an internship for this summer or you're the least bit entrepreneurial, you might want to check this program out. It happens in NYC and is open to undergrad and grad students.
6) Teen developer funds startup by auctioning 10% of her future income (Venture Beat) - I did a post about something like this a few weeks ago when the whole KMikeyM thing broke. This 19-year old girl sold off 10% of her next 10-years income to fund her startup. Pretty awesome.
7) Virgin America flights allow mile-high flirting (WKMG Orlando) - This is something with the potential to disintegrate into a shitshow moments after you hear, "You are now free to move about the cabin." Tired of getting shot down by women on the ground? Take your weak ass game to the friendly skies.
8) RD3 (GQ) - Looking for the definition of baller? Here it is. Robert Downey Jr. has gone from passed out face down on a neighbor's couch to getting paid $50 million to make The Avengers (yeah, you read that right - $50 million for one movie). It's been a bumpy ride.
9) Ben Affleck takes poverty vow: Eat on $1.50 a day (Entertainment Weekly) - While we're on the subject of actors doing silly shit, let me present Ben Affleck and his plan to live on $1.50 a day for a week. Maybe I'm just dense, but I'm not making the connection between this and how it helps the people who are actually, you know, living on $1.50 a day.
10) Why Strippers Are Strippers: Here’s One Dancer’s Take After a Shift (HyperVocal) - Okay, this is pretty impressive. Sure, she worked a double, but half of that was day crew and you know those schlubs are just there for the lunch buffet.
Video of the Week:
The following video is a trailer for what looks to be an interesting documentary on what it's like to found a startup. It includes founders from Vimeo, Dropbox, and Soundcloud, but also includes Ben and Hermione Way for some reason (how do they get their mugs into everything without actually doing anything?). Anyway, I'll be checking it out this weekend so I'll let you guys know if it's any good. Enjoy:
That's it for this week, guys. Have a great weekend and let me know what you think of this weeks Bananas in the comments!
The Virgin Air flirting service seems like a good way to meet married businesswomen who are looking for a fling with a younger guy on their business trip. I'm all for it. I just hope I don't mistakenly flirt with a lady whose husband is also on the flight and get beaten up.
That's why you lift. Oh wait...
Might have more to do with your avatar than your comment.
On a side note, watch the following video and then answer my question:
How is it possible for him to still look this fucking stupefied in an interview this many years down the road? Is the guy a mongoloid?
on discussion point #1, that guy argues that HFT trading saved these guys. Is this a joke. Firstly the market went down 145 points, ok so thats one down day on the street. Are you kidding me. Can markets no longer go down. So now if it goes down we need HFT to save us. 145 points????? I am not calling this a flash crash, i'll call it a twitch. Does this guy forget how the past few yrs, retail guys have been front run on trades. How about the real flash crash. Yea, the algos really saved us there. How low does the volume on the NYSE need to get until they realize their needs to be change, but that probably will never happen because the houses (MERC, NYSE) all getting rich off commissions from HFT.......only us small guys get screwed, fewer jobs on the street, less pay.........
I
You hear about this sort of thing every now and then (Brandes?) but this is insane. What's the appeal of a woman like that? If you're going to marry, find a nice teacher / academic / nurse. At least she'll appreciate the stuff you do.
It's like they need to validate their success by marrying a member of the banking aristocracy. She's not that hot, and sounds batshit crazy in the NYT article:
^^^Yeah, Brandes still gives me chills. I just don't see the appeal or the upside.
9... Kind of like how walking in circles is going to cure cancer? You know where I stand, lol.
3 Amen, let's get this show on the fucking road.
Does the SEC think they're protecting investors by dragging their feet? Don't they watch American Greed? I see these guys in Central Florida just raping stupid-but-wealthy people for millions, and some of us would just like the chance to legitimately raise a couple hundred thousand.
10) For people that think strippers hate their job, it's just not so. It's just like any job, where people dislike some of their customers while being sympathetic to others. Does a doctor like all of the patients that come through the door ?
On the other hand, if you start engaging strippers in conversation and not pay up or at least consume a bar tap, they'll hate you with a vengeance.
It was women, not industrial capitalism, that coined the term "time is money".
Very sound logic...and insight. :)
