Bonus Bananas May 31, 2013
1) 11 Horror Stories About The Killer Exam That Wall Streeters Will Be Taking This Saturday (Business Insider) - Thought I'd lead off this week with this gem. If you're taking the CFA tomorrow, you're gonna wanna read this to settle your nerves.
2) Blankfein Leads Bank CEO Pay With $26 Million Deemed Overpaid (Bloomberg) - Lloyd just killed it last year; there's no two ways about it. But he also killed it during a year that Goldman laid off 900 employees, had the fewest promotions to partner in 10 years, and cut the firm comp pool by 10%.
3) Fantasy holidays for the fortunate banker (eFinancial Careers) - Wondering how to reward yourself after you crush the CFA tomorrow? I can personally vouch for a couple of these spots. Go on, you've earned it.
4) 7 charged in $6B online money laundering case (Wall Street Journal) - Money laundering on this scale is obviously a very serious matter, but I defy you not to laugh out loud when you read this article and see some of the info people used to open an account. This crew makes HSBC look like a bunch of altar boys.
5) KPMG Partner Strikes Plea Deal In Herbalife Insider Case (FIN Alternatives) - Scott London is pleading guilty and throwing himself on the mercy of the court in his insider trading case. He's facing up to 20 years in prison and a $5 million fine. What do you want to bet Stevie's hoping this guy ends up being the sacrificial lamb?
6) Got a Swiss bank account? Time to fess up. (CNN Money) - If you managed to avoid detection during the first round of IRS witch hunts and you were stupid enough to keep your account open, well then you get what you deserve. It looks like the Swiss are gonna play ball after all.
7) Dot-Com Boom to Bust: CNET Founder Goes Bankrupt (CNBC) - Can somebody please explain to me how you can sell your company (arguably one of the most valuable media properties on the web today) for $1.8 BILLION and then file for bankruptcy protection just four years later??? Unbelievable. That was billion. With a "B".
8) TRUE CONFESSION: I've Completely Given Up Hope Of Paying Off $186,000 Worth Of Student Loan Debt (Business Insider) - For some reason this article elevated my blood pressure by a good ten points and gave me a rage headache. Fucking lawyers.
9) 'If you want a job, get on the pole': Female employees forced to 'dance for cash' at parties hosted by New York Parks Department bosses (Mail Online) - Quick: who else immediately pictured Ron Swanson when you read that headline?
10) Gina Rinehart Calls For Sterilization of The Poor (The Daily Currant) - Wow, Austrailia's richest woman is one mean broad. Forced sterilization for anyone making under $100,000 a year? I'll allow it.
Video of the Week:
For the most part, regular TV programming is utter crap. This is evidenced by the literally dozens of shows that were cancelled this season. But every once in awhile a show comes along that evidences real potential, and I think the trailer below is one of those shows. I could be dead wrong; it also has the potential to be trite and awful. But Sleepy Hollow has enough of the right people in it and behind it that I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Besides, who wouldn't want to watch stylistic beheadings in prime time?
That's it for this week, fellas. Let me know what you think of this week's Bananas in the comments, good luck on the CFA tomorrow, and have a fantastic weekend!
This lady needs a reality check but it's probably already too late. Took out a 20k loan to study for the bar exam? What kind of fantasy world is this lady living in? Working 13-14 hour days to pay off her obligations is too much so she packed it in and went back to FL? If this was my wife you could bet there would be a huge life insurance policy taken out and you'd see me on Date Line as the guy who did it and (hopefully) got away with it. Great way to start my day by getting my blood boiling
10) Absolutely fucking stupid. If you have a world full of nothing but people making 100K+, who the fuck is going to clean and pick up shit?
Are we just going to raise the salary of the guy who picks up roadkill to 100K?
The article was from The Daily Currant.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daily_Currant
never heard of the publication until today
Made a comment about the Daily Currant being satire, but someone beat me to it
interested to know whether satire constitutes a defense for libel in the US?
It absolutely does. And based on some of the more foolish things she's actually said in the recent past, this isn't even that libelous.
Got it, free speech and all that. Still, wouldn't be the first time she's filed suit against a journalist. And for a woman who's happy to battle it out in court with her own children, you wouldn't put it past her..
I would support forced sterilization of people who use the Seven Nation Army chant at sporting events.
9) How any of those guys still have a job confuses me.
4) How on earth did that scheme exist for so long? Reminds of me of the BCCI scandal
9) Not to get too political, but this stuff happens all the time in cities/states run by liberals. Detroit, Chicago, California and here in Atlanta. And not that this stuff never occurs in more conservative cities/states but it seems to be more isolated, like one person running a scam or stealing money, whereas in some of these ultra corrupt liberal bastions, you have numerous public figures stealing and cheating as if there are no consequences for their actions. Often there aren't consequences, since the people they've surrounded themselves with are equally corrupt, but every once in a while someone slips up or something leaks and a scandal breaks. The former mayor in Detroit would literally have people drop off bags of cash for him because of city contracts and special consideration he would give them or their company, etc.
10) Although the article is satirical in nature, I think they might be on to something. Obviously I couldn't condone forced sterilization, but what about voluntary sterilization? Say the government, or some organization, provides an incentive, say $5k or $10k, and offers to cover the cost of the procedure for those willing to get sterilized? Would that be a step in the right direction with regard to the excessive 'breeding'?
Video of the Week: Looks like a decent show. Fox has a few other shows that look like they could be good, primarily Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Almost Human and Rake.
Regards
8: I'm tempted to let her know what a piece of shit she is. There should be regulations around who can borrow what money. And I wish that the student loan bubble could be profitable for the average investor.
