Rudy Ruined "Rudy" For Me

By now, most of you have probably watched the inspirational sport film, “Rudy.” I can honestly say that few movies can, to this day, bring a tear or two to my eyes. Rudy would have always been one of those movies. People always root for the underdog, but because of Rudy’s tale, I think Americans are especially fond of the ones who might overcome it all.

For those who don’t already know, the real Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger has agreed to pay over $350,000 to settle an alleged “pump and dump” scheme. The SEC investigation claims Rudy used his epic story of playing on Norte Dame’s football team in order to lure investors into a sports drink company with claims of toppling Pepsi’s Gatorade.

Personally, I can never watch Rudy and feel the same sort of compelling hope. This degree of betrayal has left me in awe. What’s next? Do we soon find out that Michael Oher runs a massive ponzi scheme by selling his Blindside story to the families of up and coming football stars? Once again, we have learned that no one can be trusted.

For me, the movie’s ending should always have asterisk, and the crowd chanting ”Rudy……Rudy…Rudy..Rudy! RUDY!!” will never bring me the same joy. Does anyone else feel as crushed as I am?

I was never a big fan of movies like "Rudy" or "Forrest Gump," which celebrate mediocrity and lack of talent. The whole premise behind the movie, in which a guy who has absolutely no talent busts his butt off and is finally allowed to play one down at a meaningless game, does not stir up my emotions. Of course, a lot of pepole love "Rudy", and that's certainly their prerogative.

Forrest Gump. Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded.

I haven't had a carb since 2004.

You're a fucking douchebag, Brady. No wonder you need to go to business school to make friends...

Brady, you're missing the point.

MFriedman - when I got to ND as an UG in the late 90's, a lot of people dissed the movie, because the back story was that Rudy was a real self-promoter, off of one meaningless play, which Brady did get right. Even Lou Holtz supposedly said "Rudy asks, what can Notre Dame do for me?" instead of the other way around. So this was in keeping with his character. That said, there are guys who do walk on the team and bust their asses to do great things - they had a lineman in the late 60s walk on, eventually start, and play five years in the NFL.

Kinda like some Harvard Extension School chump kicking ass in the classroom and breaking into banking, eh Brady? ;)

Forrest Gump is beyond reproach. The man was slow, but he went on to do amazing things in that fictional world.

I understand the limitations of the PG rating, but Rudy was just needlessly gay and corny. Too much "ra-ra!" and "go get 'em, little gipper!" energy. Sean Astin just acted so homo in that role.

Agree, but would also like to point out that Sean Astin acts homo is most if not all of his roles. The Samwise Gamgee - Frodo Baggins homoeroticism made TLOTR films unbearable. Loved the books as a kid, wouldn't watch two hobbits about to butt fuck each other if you paid me.

True. I had to watch some made-for-TV rendition of Harrison Bergeron and he managed to homo up that role too. Little wonder how Rudy turned out to be such a shit-piece.
