Should I dress the same for a Skype interview as an in person interview?

Even though the chances of that happening seem extremely slim (who would ask someone to stand up? never happened in any of my videoconference interviews)...how lazy do you have to be to literally just not put on pants?
Calling bullshit. No way does someone ask you to stand up at the end of a skype interview.
That's when you look the interviewer square in the eyes and say, "I can't. I'm paralyzed from the waist down."
Talk about guaranteeing a job offer (Granted you'll have to show up in a wheelchair everyday for as long as you work there).
^Some expert video feed editing skills could have saved him. Far beyond my skill set.
Notice how you wrote Skype INTERVIEW? What do you wear for an interview? A full suit and tie. That's it. Do you think that just because they don't want to pay and waste money to fly you out that it's no longer important?
Kids these fukin days.... No common sense and looking to meet the lowest common denominator.
@"CreditAnalyst85", I just did not want to over dress. This is for a CA based job.
Have you ever heard of someone NOT getting a job offer at a professional job because they wore a suit? (Not including rampant speculation coming from high schoolers and college kids that have no experience outside academia?)
I have had interviews where the other person was wearing a polo.
What does the interviewer wearing a polo have anything to do with what you wear? Andmore importantly how does your statement address my question in any way? if you're interviewing, you are to dress professionally to mke a good impression. Don't know how it works in other countries, but in the US, you dress according to the interview rules for professional careers.
Are you people brain dead? Why are you looking for loop holes or ways to argue the facts? Wear a full suit, period, stop the back and forth, there is nothing to discuss.
Jesus this is why this generation has so many problems.
At my university there was a guy who showed up to MSFT interviews with jeans and what appeared to be a a ski cap. Every company is different. Also, the west coast is much more casual than NE.

I know of someone who showed up to a interview at a HF in CA in a business suit. Unfortunately the HF was very casual, sandals/shorts/jeans/tshirts casual, the interviewer asked the candidate why he didn't clarify what the dress code was before the interview.. They were not offered a position.
Are you saying he didnt get the offer BECAUSE he wore a suit? How would you know that? Was he stellar otherwise?
I don't know why the offer was not extended. What I was trying to say is 1) best to do your homework before the interview. I never liked seeing someone from outside the organization either undressed - very bad, or overdressed - not bad. 2) you want to fit in to the culture, I could see how an interviewer could judge a candidate for being to stiff etc.. or not serious enough.. based on how they dress.
He probably wasn't offered a position for bringing other people along to his interview...
My friend at Microsoft says that his boss has told him they would ding people for showing up in a suit because it shows a lack of understanding of their culture. Granted, my friend works in programming, not on the business side.
Who gave CreditAnalyst85 MS. He made some very valuable points.
Dress well, and remember the camera adds 10 pounds. Work around that.
Oh crap I forgot that! Yea better start that juice cleanse now.
Suite not matters, your stuff only the thing will help you to get into job
yes. Dress the same as in-person.
you could make the same argument with a phone interview
Funny you say that. I had a buddy (4.0 at Harvard) who had a phone screen and the interviewer Facetime called him. Needless to say, he was not wearing a suit and did not get the offer.
You should wear pants at a face to face interview.
Skype Interview? (Originally Posted: 09/17/2012)
A potential employer called me and wants to set up a skype interview as a form of secondary interview before flying me to the place of business. Any tips? I guess my main concern is whether or not I actually where a suit and tie? I have never been asked to do this sort of thing so any help is appreciated.
Dress as you would if you were there in person. Most likely it's during the day and your interviewer will be in business dress as well. Tie maybe not necessary?
Jacket, shirt, and tie, no questions. Pants optional.
yes, hands down
I have a Skype interview with a trading company, am I supposed to dress up? (Originally Posted: 02/11/2013)
Am I supposed to dress up for that? I am home and normally just wear gym shorts and a fleece around the house.
Yes, no harm in dressing up.
Yes, definitely dress up. Suit and tie, I recommend.
I'd also recommend taping some square root tables/anything else to aid mental math calculations to the wall behind your computer, given what I've heard from my friends who have had skype interviews for trading.
It's a prop trading firm in Chicago. These places tend to be casual dress. I wonder if I'll be overdressed if I wear a suit. I guess it's more understandable to be overdressed though.
if you pair shorts with your dress shirt, and you have to get up for whatever reason, make sure to rotate the camera before getting up :)
This.
I actually had a friend get asked to stand up during a Skype interview since the running joke is that people just dress up their top half and wear underwear/pj's. That could have been awkward.. haha.
I had a Skype interview with Belvedere Trading about a year ago and I just had a shirt-no tie- on. Those Chicago prop shops are very casual. They said to wear biz casual for the final round...
This is actually a fantastic question.
If it's Spot I'd just wear nothing though.
Just wear a shirt and tie with nothing below the waist. Be sure to stand up and stretch at some point during the interview to show them that you're alpha.
OP, you're probably right with respect to the content. My aspiring trader friend made a good point as to why he was asked to do skype interviews as opposed to phone interviews - the prop shops wanted to make sure he wasn't using a calculator. And follow LHDan's advice, as we all know high risk equals high reward.
OP is a troll.
Business up top party down below FTW
Why am I a troll?
Why the fuck wouldn't you dress up? also have tabs open with relavent info and resources on. Skirrt
I ended up wearing a shirt/tie with gym shorts and flip flops.
An interview is an interview no matter how it is conducted. Always dress up, even for a phone interview. It puts you in the right frame of mind.
.
Suit up.
I did a few Skype interviews this year since I've been abroad. It seems like you can't go wrong with a full suit. Also, make sure your stuff is working properly beforehand, and speak clearly. Video conferencing is definitely not ideal but you can still make the most out of it by making sure everything is technically sound.
I had someone from a BB IBD (internship position) Skype me informally to make sure I wasn't some "crazy mass-murderer." Those were his exact words haha, since I got the interview through a connection. But you get the point though. They probably just want to make sure you are who you claim to be before they go head on into the process.
I hope that helps and best of luck!
I wouldn't stress it too much, but definitely suit up and look good. I had one once, treated it as if I were going into a normal interview.
I've heard of this happening more and more, and its definitely just to make sure you are presentable. Usually the whole thing is Skype though, but I suppose maybe your interviewer doesn't want to have to deal with it being a little harder to hear/understand during most of your conversation.
Suit for sure or at least rock the sportscaster suit on top/shorts on the bottom
Only wear a suit jacket, shirt, and tie. When the interview is over, stand up, drop your LSD (little swinging dick) on the table and say, "just think about how big we could make this. Together."
Sexual innuendo + BSD reference = job offer.
