Is it bad to have MO on your resume?
I worked in MO at BNP and BNYM for one year after graduation. Now im doing my MSc in Finance.
Is having these on my CV bad if I want to go into ER or Corp Dev/ M&A? Will I be dismissed because of them? I have an amazing letter of recommendation from BNP. Doed that help?
btw, im not interested in IB.
Why are you interested in corp dev/M&A but not IB?
The hours, and when i say corp dev and M&A I mean in industry, not banking. I wouldn't turn down IB but it's not my "dream" per say.
In what way would it be bad to have it on your resume?
Well I've heard that going from MO to FO is hard, and MO resumes are immediately dismissed. Maybe this only applies to S&T?
Thanks for helping out btw. Much appreciated!
That's not true at all about the dismissal
Ok, well can I consider it a good thing that I have it on my resume then? Does it put me at a disadvantage at all? or is it beneficial?
While it's not the best...it's a hell of a lot better than having a blank period of time on your resume for 1 year...and depending on what part of MO you worked in, some actually overlap with Corp Dev, especially at some banks (internal M&A falls under the Corp Dev group in some firms).
It really depends what the MO job is and how you spin it. I had an S&T interview the other day and I spun my MO position to sound like I dealt with relationships when all I was really doing was assisting the analysts.
I don't think it is neccesarily 'bad' to put MO jobs on your resume, as you are obviously moving up the ladder by getting your MSc and interviewing for FO jobs.
Trust me, putting an MO job on your resume is better than GAPS of space. The first thing most interviewers say when I come in is that it is 'good' that I have no gaps in my work and that I have consistently had work since I graduated in a miserable economy.
Thanks. Well I was in reconciliations and control at BNP, and I was basically ''supporting'' portfolio managers and correcting any mistakes in mainly futures and options trades. I was doing this in period T+1 day, and intraday. I was in constant contact with clearers and other departments. Also with portfolio managers, but mostly they would tell me that there was a problem, I'd find out why, and then fix it.
Is this spinnable? And about the gaps, that's good to hear. At one point I even thought that having done nothing would have been better for a career in FO.
Btw, at BNP, my department was technically half FO half MO. Don't ask me how that worked, I have no idea.
Also, I am not interested in S&T in the slightest either. Only corp dev, M&A, ER, maybe PE as well. Perhaps the BO/MO/FO divide isn't so big?
My main goal is to do something forward looking, not backward like BO or MO. Forecasting and that. Merger modeling etc.
Cheers!
Given that you want something forward looking, have you considered FP&A or similar Corp Fin role?
No such thing as half FO/MO. If they say that and believe that it truly is just to make them feel better about not being in FO.
Truly, MO/BO is much, much better than nothing on your resume. Especially if your doing a Masters, 1. OCR and other recruiters will notice that you were trying to break out of that role and 2. Alot of your peers in not only yours, but other masters programs went directly from undergrad to grad without relevant work experience and this definitely gives you a leg up. In this hiring environment, or really any hiring environment, you'd be amazed at how much having a big name like BNP and HSBC sticks outs and should give you a great shot at not only first rounds(assuming you have half a brain and solid social skills), but beyond
I came from a BO role and will be moving to FO upon grad from msf.
