Energy in Calgary

Row call! Who here is in Calgary (and more broadly Canada)? I work in business development for a midstream / marketing company. Been at it for just over 3 years now. It's been a great experience with lots of exposure and responsibility (crude oil and ngl/lpg). Been thinking about long term opportunities, may try to eventually make switch to trading physical and then financial (spec).

Anyway, I'm interested in setting up a group for energy professionals specifically in Calgary. I've read some of the energy posts here, it seems like Monty has it all set up for Houston. Lots of info out there for the US side of things, seems like having a Canadian presence would benefit everyone interested in the industry and provide a great networking opportunity.

If you're interested, let me know by responding and give a a short bio of yourself. Let's start talking energy!

I've been looking to move into the energy sector out in Calgary, and would be interested in learning more about people working in the field. I'm a new graduate that's just about to write my Level I CFA exam.

I agree on there not being much about commodities or energy, but if you head into PE or ER with an energy focus, CFA will be useful.

Also agree that in general no one discourages it - BUT I work at a company with somewhat strange policies, and know for a fact that the last round of recruitment they took all the resumes with CFA on them and threw them out without further review. Dead serious. It was about a third of the resumes. (The reasoning being that CFA does not relate much, and most likely it means candidate wants to go into banking / finance, etc). Not saying I agree or that it makes sense (I think it's ridiculous), but I have advised anyone applying here to take CFA off their resume and keep it on the DL. The policy is likely an outlier and as marcellus pointed out, should probably not be generalized to other firms.

Marcellus, I think I read somewhere you are in nat gas trading? based out of calgary?
