JPM Finance (branch) or VC SF

Hey guys I am a freshman At Ohio State and my goal is by my sophmore year to get an IBD rotational program at a BB.

As a freshman I have 2 paths so far.
1) do some work at a small VC in San Fran ( the MD has worked IBD in both Goldman, and BAML, and I know him very well so I can use him as a connection)

2) or go to JPM Chase (Columbus, its a big branch) Finance and try to internally switch to NYC and hope to get into a rotational program there (I dont have any connections there but I feel like if I can impress them I can move to JPM's rotaional program internally).

Which do you guys think is a better option?

Someone was also trying to tell me to go to a Big4 freshman year, but I think that would not help too much.

Thank you very much

I'd say the more entrepreneurial opportunity would be better for you; you're working in a more intimate environment with a senior guy who has experience at some good places, and if you do something that differentiating as a frosh, I imagine you'd have absolutely no trouble parlaying it into better placement next year even if the guy was absolutely silent on your behalf. If he pulls for you with people you know (which you'll enjoy there as opposed to the bigger shop where you might end the summer with no one really knowing you), you're golden.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Thanks a lot! This makes a lot of sense.

Getting a job is not about who you know. It is about how well the people you know, know you.

No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions; he had money as well.

Well said. Also I guess that vc internship will help a lot since he did say I would work on 5 projects using valuation modeling. I just heard of 3-4 kids in the past from OSU who did Big 4 accounting frosh year, JPM finance (Ohio) soph year, then JPM IBD NYC junior year internally, but like you said if I can prove to this MD that I am good and that I want it bad enough I am sure he could pull a few strings, but I am not sure if he knows more people West Coast or East.

Thanks

VC without a doubt

there is a pretty wide chasm in terms of the potential of these opportunities...

and not to hate on Ohio but wouldn't the opportunity to live/work in SF be more interesting than Columbus, Ohio?

True that, I think that SF would be a lot of fun. I just dont want west coast banking ( I love NYC for some reason)

But that isn't an option this year. You have Ohio and SF. One is clearly better than the other. Geographical proximity doesn't directly relate to future placement opportunity.
