Salary Levels for Entry-Level VC
What are the average salary levels like for associate positions in the top venture capital firms?
And is there a difference in terms of compensation between the East Coast and West Coast?

I'd like to know as well. Where'd VCMonkey go?
I have no personal experience in this field...and this is a large range...but prolly between 40-55K would seem appropriate (bonus not included).
40-55k for post-IBD associate positions? Sounds a bit low. I recall VCMonkey stating something in another thread previously about this:
This was almost exactly 2 years ago, however, and I'm not sure how much has changed from 2007 to 2009. Can anybody help out in this regard?
Its more. base is usually $100k ish
Who gives a rats ass about your random guesses? YOu obviously know nothing, yet you still try to muddy the waters.
If you don't know - don't pull something out of your ass.
Post 2 years IBD, about 90-130k base, 20-50k bonus. Trajectory is awful (for finance).
Who is that clown who said 40-55k?
ideating, could you elaborate on the context of your data? i.e. firm, AUM, size, etc.?
And in terms of saying "Trajectory is awful," are you simply saying that VC salaries are comparatively lower to other post-IBD buy-side positions in PE and HF?
As I understand it, VC actually works differently than other finance jobs; typically the better the firm, the less the initial compensation. It's an admittedly small sample size I'm drawing from but VC itself is a pretty small sample.
Trajectory refers to the ramp up in comp as you gain experience (think 3-5 years).
Apologies.. didn't see he was talking about an associate position...assumed it was analyst.
40-55k ... What the shit is that??? Maybe for an entry level Financial Analyst but why does this dude think 40,000? Almost make that in the bonus..
Early Stage VC Post MBA Salary (Originally Posted: 06/15/2015)
I've been hearing mixed things regarding post mba salaries at early stage VC firms. I've heard anything from $100k with no carry to $175k+ with carry. Anyone have concrete data on what salaries actually are? How much does this change at small funds (sub $100m) to larger funds ($100m-$1bn)?
its both. it depends on size of fund, number of other invrestment professionals (if there is a large # of vps, typically no carry for associates, but decent bonus). if its a smaller fund, there is no standard. Unless you are at a brand name, comp is all over the place.
thanks for the reply dim Sum cook . do you have any specific data points you're willing to share?
VC comp unfortunately is really haphazard. For very large firms, I think the pay is overall more structured since it's benchmarked against PE. So I would guess they would make ~75-80% of what a post MBA PE associate would make.
Early stage firms are really hard to benchmark, since there are so few people. I would say the comp for post MBA associates is closer to the top end of the range you mentioned than the bottom. carry is not always given to senior associates but it happens reasonably often, and almost always if it's a partner track position.
appreciate the reply VC_associate_13. any idea on expected bonus range for funds where associates don't get carry?
30-50% of base is the range I've seen
yeah you're spot on. In my experience, comp varies little in the $200m-$1bn range. Outside of this range, things can move quite a bit.
Boutique VC Analyst Salary (Originally Posted: 12/20/2012)
Hey guys,
Just wanted a quick opinion on whether I'm underpaid or not. Would you say a base salary of 60-65k + 25% bonus is reasonable for an first year / second year analyst position is reasonable? I have one year unrelated experience + about a half year at my current VC boutique. I'm working around 60 hours a week and keep in mind this is a small fund and in a 2nd/3rd tier city (think similar to Cleveland/Indianapolis/Milwaukee).
I interned at a middle market VC firm in college, and while I obviously wasn't paid that, it sounds very reasonable.
I mean I do think it is pretty reasonable, albeit on the slightly lower side. I felt that 70-75k base + 35% bonus for a 1st/2nd year analyst would have been more in line with the industry. Although I guess when you consider I'm in a 2nd/3rd tier city, at a smaller fund, and am only a half year into my first year, maybe my expectations were too high to start. Perhaps it might be more reasonable to be expecting those numbers after next year...
.
Can't answer PMs as I don't have enough banana points. I merely made this account to protect my identity as I don't want people I work with/know to see that I'm asking these types of questions (as some of my previous posts on my main may give away who I am). Please try to stick to topic (if you do have specific questions, PM me and I'll msg you from my main).
You might be a little underpaid if you're working at a true VC, even in a tier 2/3 market. I knew someone at a smaller firm in a tier 2 domestic market that was making 70-80 + bonus.
I don't think you're underpaid, given the info you've provided and my knowledge of how my firm pays 1st/2nd yr analysts.
Nope. It's in line with the market assuming you are straight out of college.
Would say that sounds about right as well
Probably right on the money in terms of mean salaries in the industry, if I had to guess.
How about those with MBA degress joining VC; what's the salary like?

Hi.
Do you guys now what's the salary for a VC Analyst with the IB experience in London? We are talking about quite small, seed/early-stage funds focused on general tech.
The only sensible & honest answer to this is "variable".
I would suggest that you should expect a salary cut.
Salary for pre-MBA VC analyst (Originally Posted: 03/11/2010)
I am looking at moving into VC, and I was curious if any one could speak to typical salary ranges for a Pre-MBA Analyst position. It would be at place similar to Kleiner or DFJ
I work as an associate for a VC in southeast (cost of living lower than most VC markets such as NY, Boston, CA). I make $65,000 with a small carried interest.
