So you are arguing that someone who engages in a positive charitable act, such as donating and raising awareness for a good cause, may then use that to rationalize future bad behavior? Raising $60MM+ for a good cause and having a bit of fun is bullshit? Bro, you are the worst. Never go full retard.
I've heard the moral self licensing argument more times than I can count over the last few weeks regarding the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I think that's a cop-out argument when it's misused like your doing. I think that, as a means of raising awareness, it's a wonderful tool, especially when most people don't know what ALS is. There's no difference the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raising awareness for ALS Research and wearing a Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer awareness, a Red Ribbon for AIDS awareness or a Black Ribbon which is tied to soldiers who are POW/MIA or as remembrance for tragedies.
Now, don't get me wrong, I do have issues with this, but not because it raises awareness for a cause like ALS Research. That's something entirely different.

Actually, either way, the answer is 'no', so I guess it doesn't matter.
The idea behind the ice bucket challenge was this, donate or pour ice water on your head. What is it now? Narcissism as it highest, it has turned into people filming themselves pouring water on their head for facebook "likes" while attempting to shame your facebook friends into validating your narcissism by challenging them to do it too. The idea of moral self licensing is the premise behind any viral social do good campaign. Has it raised a bunch of money? Sure, but it has made obvious to any idiot that hasn't been paying attention that social media in general is nothing more than an existence of pure narcissism. How many of you have ever taken a selfie? How many of you have taken said selfie over and over again to make sure it is perfect? We live in a society that values their own belief of self worth over everything. While pretending to actually give a shit about anything that isn't directly attributed to ourselves. I'll admit I am a narcissistic asshole. But what I won't do is pretend to be altruistic, by showing my narcissism for the world to see and claim I am only doing it because I am a great person.
I did the ice bucket challenge and I dont give a damn about als. I did it to show off, have fun and everyone who watched my video knew it. There are plenty others that did the same thing. I even donated money but thats only because i know its a easy tax write off.

a client of ours (now deceased) had it, was very hard to watch. you feel very helpless all the way until the very end.
a friend of mine's father has it and it's absolutely horrible to watch and see what she's going through; he's barely alive, completely immobile except for his eyes.
I guess have a different perspective because I've witnessed it, and while I see people's points about wanting attention on social media and validation for their good deed from their friends, I personally don't give a fuck what their motivation is nor will I flame them for what they're doing. I'm about results, and if it spreads awareness and raises money for a good cause, then mission accomplished I say.
No one is saying that the donations aren't great. However the problem is very few are donating for the sake of donating. They are donating for the attention. The real question to ask is will they continue to donate once this fad goes away? Will they only donate again next time a viral fad pops up?

I agree with that hiester is saying and agree people will quickly move on and forget. But I don't care since their money will be used for additional awareness and research.
Fundamental problem is this illness impacts so few that it is hard to justify spending to cure it when you could make small improvements with other illnesses and have such a better impact.
In a world of finite resources sometimes you need to focus on the good of the many over the needs of a few.
While on the surface it may have gotten annoying it's helped raise a lot of money for a disease that gets little attention as others have said. I understand the limited resources vs number of afflicted but the ALS group came up with a brilliant viral marketing campaign, god bless 'em.
And if it really annoys you, just ignore it on FB. Donate and don't flaunt/post it. Or don't and ignore it. If you let things like this get to you you'll end up with ulcers and heart attacks at a young age.
I would bet a fair bit money that a lot of the people who have done the ice bucket challenge have either no idea what it is for, don't donate anyway, or have no real altruistic inclination to advance the cause of finding a cure for ALS. However, kudos to the guy who came up with the ice bucket challenge for recognizing Americans' narcissistic obsessions with social media and self congratulation. His ability to take advantage of stupid people with money to burn has helped raise tens of millions of dollars for a cause which I'm sure he cares a lot about.
