I'm no developer so I have no idea how hard this would be to implement, but what about a chat feature similar to Gmail or the new facebook chat? Where you can add people to your buddy list, then when they're online you can chat with them?
I don't think I have ever spent more than 10 min in an actual chat room, but I use gmail chat and the new facebook chat constantly during class and find them to be much more popular to non-psychotic, non-pedophile type people opposed to chat rooms which seem to be a breeding ground for the aforementioned (not that I think WSO has too many of those types of users, however, I believe that "chat room" has a negative connotation due to the publicity of To Catch a Predator and similar programs/news).. Just a thought.
