How many are taken into MBB per year?
How many are taken into MBB per year? My guess would be around 50 per firm. Is this accurate?

hundreds. my office alone has 20-30 out of undergrad per year. i'm not in NY or Boston even.
^^^ Works for Bain
McKinsey took 17 last year from my school (HYPS), so there are at least 200-300 overall. Bain is known to be a younger firm, so my guess is that they'd take more undergrads than the other two.
BCG has the diamond structure - so they take twice as many MBAs vs undergrads. About 70 to 80 undergrads and 150 MBAs for BCG.
McKinsey and Bain or diamond structure and will take more undergrads. 100 undergrads for Mckinsy and 60 for Bain.
@AudiChow - You mean pyramid structure for Bain + (to a lesser extent) McKinsey.
Your numbers are off. Bain certainly hires more than 60/year.
In Asia, the number is shockingly small.
Numbers of undergraduate/graduate recruited for the M company in Asia(2009) Japan: 3 Korea: 1 China/H.K: 11 / 2
thats cause consulting is doing horrible in asia last year
2010 will even see a lower number
why's that? (curious, not doubtful)
I've heard first-hand from recruiters that McK and BCG have diamond structures (many more MBA's than undergrads), and Bain has a pyramid structure (the opposite). So Bain has proportionately more undergrads. However, you also have to keep in mind that Bain is a much smaller firm overall than the other two, so they may in fact recruit fewer undergrads overall.
MBB Class Size (Originally Posted: 02/09/2013)
Does anyone know what the typical intern/incoming post-undergrad class size is for MBB? Obviously this varies by location, but let's say new york
10 for summer, 30 for full time?
sounds right
10 for summer sounds high, usually more like 4-7. I've heard that it's usually a 5x or 6x multiple from summers to FT
Not in my experience. ~10 for summer and ~30 for FT sounds about right.
Just joined an MBB. The recruiter said it has ranged from 30-50 in the last few years, but it's a large Middle East office and they've expanded rapidly so it's definitely on the high end of the spectrum
It's for entry level (Associate, Business Analyst) so yes mostly undergrads or candidates with little experience.
My school had five people get offers at McKinsey this year (this is for Summer Business Analyst), in New York. Assuming that the other top targets also had a similar number, that's easily fifteen summer analysts in the New York office. Does that seem too high?
What about for a Southern office?
For Boston, NYC, and Chicago, can someone estimate how many associates/consultatns that McKinsey/BCG hire each year from MBA/PhD/JD program? I'm guessing Boston 20, NYC 40, and Chicago 30; any other estimation?
Number of Associate Consultants / Business Analysts at MBB? (Originally Posted: 06/17/2011)
Anyone know how many ba/bs hires there are at each of MBB?
my class had about 15 in each major office. probably 5 or so in smaller ones. Not sure if that completely helps, but that would be close to 150 in US?
I heard Bain was around 30 for Chicago
anyone have global numbers?
i want to be able to say, of xxxxx applicants, only xxx got hired, of which i am one.
these stats would be helpful in explaining to my family that getting a job in mbb is kind of a big deal.
Make up numbers, you're a consultant after all. BCG has ~70 offices, Bain has ~40 offices, McKinsey has over 100. Assume ~10 BAs per office. I'd say around 2500 is probably close. I've also heard around 2% of applicants get offers.
Here's my wild-ass guess with made up numbers:
M has 9,000 consultants, B(CG) has 4,400, and B(ain) has ~2,500* systemwide.
*5,000 employees systemwide, and B being pretty similar in structure to M, we'll say about half of them are front office.
MBB, like all partnerships, are a pyramid-type structure, with fewer people as you go up through the ranks, but one thing that we should be aware of is that this may or may not apply to the AC/BA level (there might be more MBA-level new hires). So we'll assume there are on average about 2 BAs to 3 associates. Partners probably make up about 10% of those ranks, mid/upper level, non-partner ranks (everything between partner and post-MBA new hire) probably make up about 40%, with the rest being BAs and associates. So 20% for BAs and 30% associates.
My final WAG would be M: 1,800, B(CG): 880, and B(ain): ~500, worldwide. Actually I came pretty close to your guess of 2,500.
hmm thanks. i don't want to make up numbers if there is in fact a reputable source for this info. i was sure that the collective knowledge of wso would be the easiest place to find the answer without really looking myself. i'm not lazy, i'm efficient.
if you are efficient then you would've found a thread a while ago with very close numbers
If you really want to know, shoot HR an email.
M has about 50 summer BA's this year
.
My Bain offer letter quoted the acceptance rate as between 1-2%.
You could use LinkedIn to get a rough estimate. For instance, searching people listed as "Business Analyst" with McKinsey as current company would give you 1345 results. Now for the number of Associates, we would need to exclude the "Associate Principals" from the results. So we would get 729 APs and 4122 Associates. This would give us 3393 (4122-729) Associates, for a BA to Associate Ratio of 2.5 to 1.
Furthermore, to get an estimate of the number of hires, it should be at least half of that quantity, assuming positive growth ratio, so I would say McKinsey hires at least 670 BAs for year around the globe.
The same procedure can be done to find out numbers for Bain and BCG.
