Friends = power?

They (game of thrones) make the claim that a man with friends is a man with power. This seems to be the notion in business. What do you guys think, is this true? Can a man make it without friends? How important is relationships in banking.

Howard Roark had no friends. I would venture to say a lot of successful people are so iconoclastic that it is hard for them to make/keep friends. Obviously though having powerful friends is very beneficial.

Howard Roark is also a fictional character.

Valid point, but I think you could also make an argument that bill gates, steve jobs, warren buffett and many others were at one time without friends, powerful one anyways. You could probably throw Zuckerberg into the list to. It seems like if you are an innovator you can be eccentric and do fine. Otherwise you wanna be as popular as possible.

Friends = power, yes. However, a large, dynastic family = much greater power.

Friends are friends. How is this a discussion?

Because some people look at relationships in terms of what they can get out of the relationship professionally/in relation to their advancement, as opposed to focusing on just making friends and happening along the way to gain power through association with people who are in positions of power. My impression is that this is extremely common, especially in finance.

Oh come on you know the only reason you're friends with a woman is to have sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky.

These are not friendships. These are professional relationships. Be aware of the difference.

You are the average of the five people you talk to most.

Relationships are everything, if you help people they will help you back and vice versa, that is how you create a positive feedback loop. The buyside is a tad different because they want to hide info, but from a sell side perspective if you can help someone make money, sell their business for higher etc. you just made a new long-term friend. Now he/she will give you referrals.

Average and broke people believe it is smart to "cut people down" rich people actually make strong bonds and will give you straight forward advice regardless of your emotions. This is helpful. You want to help people with honesty because finance is a small world and you want to create strong trust and build real relationships.

So yes, I would take a real friend any day over a few extra G's in the bank. If you have 5 real relationships, people who would drag you back up when you're down regardless of your station in life consider yourself a very wealthy man. Most will instead try to keep you down and tell you to not improve yourself. Those friends are for the unsuccessful. Cut off all people who don't drag you up. They will eventually burn you.
