How to turn my life around
Hi guys,
i'm from a target overseas doing a law/commerce undergrad.
last semester i bombed out and failed 3 courses, so cum gpa atm is about 2.1.
there really is no excuse for the grades - i was scared of not getting "A"s in them, and just didn't turn up at the exams all together. I really am scared I'll keep on doing this, right now i'm doing my assignment but always so scared of f-ing it up.
I am working full-time as a lawyer trainee at a small law firm in my city (think ~15 lawyers). I am also the president of a student club at uni and had run my start-up before, got seed funding then failed.
I like entrepreneurship and it's perhaps my ultimate goal, but as with everything i do in life it's always abt the $$. So finance, mgmt consulting, anything.
I don't like law, it feels like grunt work (that's fine) but bad pay, even if top-tier.
I'd also like to go the US when i graduate my undergrad, which is 3 yrs time.
How do I develop a better work ethic? what would you do if you were in my position?
Thanks
Well, the first thing you need to realize is that you can only get an "A" on something that you actually take.
I don't understand the question. Showing up to your final exams seems like a good start.
Go to your exams and get your GPA up. That should be your absolute top priority.
As a dude that's been through some dark times here's a quote I like.
"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things."
You've got a loooooonnnnnngggggggggg life ahead of you (you could be alive another 100 years) don't panic over a couple of bad years now.
you are a freshman right? If so, just hit the books harder and dont give up....also, change your major? It would be hard to ace your classes if you dont even care for any of the topics.
do I understand it right: you were between B and A, and as a solution to not get Bs (i.e. afraid of not getting As) you decided to skip all 3 exams?
If I understand your situation right then I don't think there are issues with your work ethics (imo)
It looks more like psychology type of story. Solution? I don't know man, need to know more. Here is a quick suggestion though: try talking to someone in person about it (i.e. friends, parents). You might get useful insights from a relaxed but focused conversation.
On a side note, it reminds me of Rachel Zane from TV series Suits, she was afraid of not being perfect and ended up fucking up her tests. Great show btw, highly recommended to you since you are in this money/corporate culture.
I really hope this helps, and little problems don't turn into big ones...
Good Luck
Speaking as someone who seriously fucked up and just landed a job in high finance, I can seriously relate to the position you are in. There are VERY few people on this website who lack the initiative/confidence to kill themselves for the ultimate opportunity. So, what can you do to up your work ethic? Well, it's all about the goals you have set for yourself. What is the easiest, most efficient, path from point A to point B? The easiest thing for you to do would be to transfer and basically start fresh.... How much do you want this?
go talk to a shrink.
Just decide now that you want a high GPA, and then get it. Prepare 2 weeks advance for each exam, SHOW UP, then walk in and kill it. If it was meant to be, you will step up to the plate and get it done. If it's not, then you won't, and you won't be making as much money as the rest.
Your heart's not in it and you're panicking. Seriously, take some time off and rethink your personal goals. It may be a week, a month, a year: I took 5 years away from college because I had no idea what I was doing, my best friend figured his life out in one good weekend, everyone is different. These things happen. You need to figure out your priorities and when you get your head straight then you'll be running to those exams!
......either that or grow the fuck up and do the work, it's not going to do itself, I don't know what else to tell you.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your help. I've come to the decision to change to a Bachelor of Business Management degree at my current university because I'd like to do mgmt consulting in the future and that's the course i'll get a high GPA in.
Thanks again.
Thank you!
Take baby steps
Aim for a B on your next exam (which is fucking easy). Then on your next exam aim for a B+ etc. When you get your tests back, analyze what you got wrong and figure out how you could have prepared better for it.
I had bad grades my first few years in school but once I got to my business/finance related courses I started doing much better becaus i saw the light at the end of the tunnel
How long did you have left to complete on your current studies?
informational interviews!
