Investment Banking Phone Interview
Hi everyone,
I go to a non-target university, and have been looking to land an IB internship. As a result of cold-emailing senior bankers at middle market/boutique I-banks in the area, I finally got a couple responses. One firm was impressed by my resume (interned for a VP working on VC deal) and scheduled a phone interview with me--how should I prepare/what should I expect?
Senior bankers can grill the shit out of you, so be prepared.
Technical and Behavioral.
Agree with BT, he knows his shit. Know your story, know why you want to talk to him, & know what you are supposed to do.
Thanks for the replies. The interview is with the senior banker's associate, so it might not be as intense but I will still well prepared. What are important key points I should be prepared for?
-Story -3 statement analysis -other accounting concepts -3 methods of valuation -other valuation concepts -behavioral... be interesting

I have a phone interview for a full-time position with a junior level employee from the IB team. What can I expect and how can I do well? What type of technicals would I get? This is the interview after passing the HR screen.
A lot of people sound quite awkward over the phone, so as long as you seem normal and prepared, you should be fine.
For preparation, what is recommended? This is my first ib interview with someone from the team after passing the HR screen round.
IB Phone Interview! (Originally Posted: 09/22/2010)
Hey everyone so despite my username, I have a IB phone interview lined up for next week. What should I expect?
As far as "technicals", I'm pretty comfortable explaining: -DCF model -Different valuation methods -Links between financial statements -Basics of Fixed Income valuation (Bond Pricing, YTM, Duration) -Credit Ratios
Is there anything I'm missing that is common for ib interviews?
Thank you in advance!
Is this for IBD or Sales & Trading?
Illini, it is for IBD
Anyone? Any advice would be appreciated.
My first MM IB Phone Interview (Originally Posted: 12/13/2011)
Hey guys,
I have a phone interview lined up with a MM IB on Monday. Since it is my very first phone interview, I don't know what to expect. It is scheduled for about 30 minutes. Does this imply that there are only questions about my person since it is that short? The interviewer is a VP if this helps..
Thanks in advance!
a mix of fit +technical questions. be ready to speak about your experience, why banking. pls use the search function on this forum.
know these....
Walk through your resume Why I banking Why their middle market firm Know DCF breakdown Know Valuation Techniques Know Basic LBO Brainteasers
I got fucked on the brainteasers part....its good to brush up on those
And keep all this stuff in front of you while youre on the phone, just in case. good luck!
Thank you for details!
to add to the above:
Know your accounting (e.g. how $10 depr expense flows through the statements, how an inventory purchase would affect each, etc)
The formula for EV, make sure to understand each part (i.e. why D&A is added back) WACC--Cost of debt vs cost of equity and characteristics of each
Thanks guys, it's really appreciated! I will work on the points you mentioned. (And i hope there won't be any brainteaser..)

Got contacted by an HR asking for my availability to chat on the phone. It's been a full day since I replied but no response. Is this typical? Thought about following-up as I never experienced an interview scheduling taking more than a day.
Shit could have hit the fan over there. Give it a 2-3 full days then follow up with an updated schedule of times your available.
they are busy. relax.
