"Immigrants Found Nearly Half of Top Start-ups"

Really interesting,

I never thought about starting a venture after bschool, but it seems it is hard for non-americans.

Isn't this article an evidence the US is going to lose its edge to India and China?

Immigrants are Key to Start up

Even Chile might become the next big thing because of governmental projects such as this one:
Chile Start up

No.

what no...

do you mean, no to chile being the next big thing? well, it wont compete with india or china, but it might become the sillicon valley of Latam. it already has the best living standards of the region, if you dont agree then you have no idea what you are talking about.

It is very unlikely that government's patronage for start-ups will create any innovation or enterprise. Just like the centrally planned economy always ends up in a failure. China is baked and there is no innovation there either (it's a combination of cheap labour, cheating on fx and stealing IP from all over the world), so would not want to wish that on Chile.

IMHO Chilean's economic success is down to General Pinochet's actions to overturn communists and introduce free market economy.

No.

Next question.

Cool article, BTW

Exactly. If anything, it means all the smart and creative guys will move over to the US.

And also, read the article and looked through the website (zoosk) it talks about. An average 16 y/o webdesigner would come with a nicer design and the idea? Dating website? Yeah... that's new.

I was actually serious about the article. You're correct in pointing out that the average sophistication there is far behind the average here, even if the top end of things one ups everyone once in a while. I just like seeing the developments though, because I've always been fascinated by the massive, untapped human potential of those areas: five year old playing with computer parts in the street, peasants with cell phones, physics being taught in front of thousand year old temples, and universities cranking out hundreds of thousands of degrees a year will eventually lead to some development despite the extremely rough edges.

As for corruption, I haven't been there yet but I have a LOT of friends that grew up in India and they constantly tell me that if you've got money you can buy pretty much anything you want. Stories of walking through customs after handing a guard $100, buying POUNDS of drugs out in the open, getting any weapon you want, and controlling local politicians/police is EASY and BLATANT. There's even stories of people registering their neighbor dead and stealing their property...since most people don't have a birth record, it's impossible to prove they exist. And we're just talking individual corruption: giant companies / mafias are raping the average person / entire villages out of everything they can. Meanwhile, a legit citizen has to wade through a nightmare of bullshit rules to open a fruit stand. Good luck with that.

China is even MORE corrupt and the big difference is that there is a limit to how much an outsider can buy in. You have to keep a VERY close eye on everything and even then the government may just take it from you because they can...and by "government" I mean whatever corrupt local thinks he can pull a fast one. Everything there is a leveraged situation. A guy I know who is, er, heavily invested over there has massive dirt on the people he does business with...it's the only real guarantee. Fucked up, but that's what it is.

The level of repressed creativity and ambition in those nations is mindblowing and I can't really see the current systems surviving very long. People SEE things and they WANT them, and if the last few hundred years of history prove anything, it's that when the people finally speak up they are heard.

Get busy living

Agreed, however, eventually its going to click with countries such as India and China that why are we allowing our best and brightest to depart our countries to enrich others? If they want to continue their spurts of growth, it has to. I've read a few things about how they're already trying to provide incentives for these people to remain.

Actually, every American VC start up is founded by immigrants. Some are just newer to this country.

This is rather obvious don't you think. The USA provides the legal, capital and freedom to unleash creative juices. The best and brightest from around the world come here for an education and end up creating something. Sounds like the way things always have been to me. Go try and start something up in India or Russia with the corruption and lack of infrastructure.

Completely agree.

^^^^^ True True I actually never fully understood how corrupt India is until I heard a crazy story from my friend who lives there.

I want a lady on the street, but a freak in the bed, Go Bucks!!
