"In reply to"

I'm not a fan. Instead of being able to sidestep a long set of replies by simply scrolling through, the replies are scattered, which also makes it harder to follow a conversation if I wanted to. A for effort, but I'm just not feeling this.

Need to fix the problem where if you click on the "new" replies/responses, it still keeps you on the first page of the thread.

The site used to do that, but ages ago it was changed. Not sure why.

Thanks for the feeback UFO...what if those "in reply to" tabs, if you clicked it, it didn't hop you up to the comment it was referencing, but actually showed it by sliding it above the comment. So if I was replying to you, it would say "in reply to UFO"...and if anyone wanted to see what your comment was, they could clikc that tab and it woudl slide open above my comment showing what you said.

That is where we're going with this...all these changes, including the new header that just went live is v1.0...we are hard at work to make it better.

Also, I'm not sure what you mena by the replies are scattered? This is the same as it was before (all replies are chonological)...all those tabs do is indicate if the comment is specifically replying to another comment.

Maybe that is confusing?

Great that you're so active/open w/ our suggestions, <3 you Pat !

Agreed.

I see no need to reinvent the wheel. I'm used to the other way. I come here for the excellent content and the interactions with others, and the more straightforward the technology is the better.

You will, of course, do what you see as best, I just prefer the old way.

I hear that you like the old way better...I just honestly don't see how we changed anything? The comments are all showing up just like they did before in chronological order. The only difference is now if someone was replying to another comment, there is the "In reply to" tab on top of that comment. Users have always been replying before, people just didnt know to what/whom...so maybe the tabs just make things more confusing?

I think once we have the jquery working it will be a pretty awesome feature (and prevent everyone from having to use the quote function to reply which takes up a lot of vertical space, like this comment)...

If you changed it so that clicking the reply to button populated the comment that was replied to, then you could click the "Replied to" button on the comment that was replied to before that and have that commentpopulate in the same place... wasn't sure if that was what you were saying.

not sure i follow...I'm saying that in FUTURE, when you click the "in reply to username" tab, it will show the comment that is getting replied to by sliding a window up above the comment.

So, for example, you leave a comment:

DM comment: "Patrick, you're an idiot!"

I create a reply comment to yours and say "Why is that?"

My "Why is that?" comment would have a "In reply to D M" tab on it. If anyone clicks that tab, a window would quickly slide open above my "Why is that?" comment to reveal your "Patrick, you're an idiot!" comment....even if it was 30 comments up on the page.

This prevents scrolling and hopping the user around...they can immediately click on the "In reply to D M" and see that my "Why is that?" comment was in response to the comment where you are calling me an idiot.

Make sense?

Yea definitely, sounds good to me, I was trying to make it more complicated

I see, so this is still a work in progress. Knowing how well you do everything, I'll probably come around to your way of thinking sooner or later. Still though, I'd just keep it simple and focus on other aspects of the site. I liked the uncomplicated reply system you've had up until very recently, it kept the focus of the site on the content and interaction as opposed to having to deal with format changes a la facebook's tampering with their newsfeed and every other 'upgrade'. I hate to be critical, but I am right now. I don't like change. I love everything else about this site.
