Information Sessions - Questions to Ask
*edited: what i meant was On-Campus Information Sessions
besides the usual:
" What was your background before you broke into IB" and others.
was wondering if you guys could share some other solid questions.
Surely if you asked for an informational you'd be after some specific information? Or are you just doing this to get him to forward your resume?
By info sessions, I am assuming you mean bank-sponsored school events, not one-on-one networking meetings. If that is the case, I would stick to background questions, breaking in questions, group specific questions relating to the banker's industry or product group, questions on standing out, and any tips on the process. All of this is really general, but that's because it is an info session - you are meeting with, probably, several bankers, and one of numerous students in attendance. Sticking to basic questions and, ideally, opening the door to get a business card and future conversations is the key to success here. Generally speaking, you're not going to become best friends with a banker or get a resume drop at a brief info session, but you can get a nice back and forth going - a solid dialogue sticking to the basic questions and the basics about you - from there, you can try to get some contact info to continue the conversation later.
Good luck and for more on the information networking meeting - once you've gotten the contact info - check this out: http://www.bankonbanking.com/2009/08/25/effectively-working-the-informa…
This is very helpful. Thank you
A few questions about networking/bb information sessions (Originally Posted: 08/07/2012)
I've done everything I can to prepare technically and have the experience to be set for junior summer. All I have left is to do everything in my ability to get luck on my side - which means network. My school is a target for a number of bbs, and they start coming to campus in late August for full time recruiting. They also come back in November for SA recruiting, but a number of them open their information sessions in August to both full time and internship recruiting.
First, should I go to the information sessions in August if they're open to both full time and summer analyst recruiting? The focus is on full time, but is this still a good way to get my name out there?
Second, I have a contact who knows an MD at X investment bank. This bank is coming to campus for FT/SA info session the first week of school. Should I email the contact and try to get an introduction before the information session, or would it be pointless considering the company will be on campus so soon anyway. If I do get an introduction should I try for a phone conversation or something before the information session?
Thanks!
is this mothafucker serious
whoa! i've yet to throw you monkeyshyt! but guess what, other 2 monkeys did it before me!
if i wanna ask silly questions i would post it somewhere else mind you.
contact the MD or anyone at the firm
If you have the time, why not go? As long as you are presentable no one is going to kick you out. More exposure at info sessions, better chance they remember you.
Yes, pull all the stops for facetime with an MD. You gotta stand out amongst fellow student-applicants.
Okay thanks for the answers. I will go to the information sessions for sure.
As for the second question, if I email the connection and ask him to introduce me to the MD..what do I say? I noticed your firm is coming to campus and was wondering if you had time to talk beforehand? He's going to tell me to just wait for the information session, isn't he?
Make yourself seem more interesting & interested than other candidates
Don't worry man, I hit him with shit. Never understand the pleasure one gets from trolling. Internet tough guys are pretty funny to say the least.
Informational questions. I would just be curious and ask them about their path to where they are right now. Ask them about if they could go back to the beginning what they would do over, what skills they would learn that would of helped them hit the ground running, if they know anyone else you could talk to. Basically just get them to like you and get some good information. Nothing is better than being at an interview and being asked "why XYZ, why this position" and being able to respond with peoples names and insights and conversations you have had. Really shows the extra effort, that you tried to really find out about the culture, fit, etc.

Is asking an analyst or associate about recent deals or transactions they have been apart of too specific for an information session? Should I take a different approach, such as asking questions about their background and why they chose investment banking or consulting?
I was hoping to think of questions that won't be asked by a majority of the students in attendance. Could use some advice, if anyone has thoughts on the subject.
As always, thanks for the help.
Thanks! appreciate the feedback!
Should be fine. Obviously if they're not publicly announced, they can't speak on the sweet details.
No, you're fine. Before I ask I always say "share what you think is appropriate or allowed", but most of talk a bunch about their deals and I ask everyone from analyst to vp
Great, thanks for the help guys.
don't ask boring ass questions that are painful to answer like generic "oh what do you do as an analyst..." or "what is the culture of the firm like", crap that everyone and their mothers ask you outside of info sessions.
have some interesting ones else be labeled boring ass tool.
