JP Morgan Middle Office in Newark DE vs. Commercial Real Estate Appraisal

So after graduating from a non-target last year I was unable to procure a job for a few months and eventually I took a role as a commercial real estate appraiser. I studied real estate investments in my last year at school and I think my ultimate goal when I took my current position was to try to obtain an aquisition analyst or some type of RE investment analyst role after getting some experience.

While job hunting I came in contact with a recruiter who sent my resume along for a JP Morgan middle office role in Newark, Delaware and I got a call that I was selcted for a final interview. The job is for the IB Division to do loan processing, reconciliaitons and getting deals started. I was wondering what exit opps there were for this role and if I could be at risk getting stuck in this position and not advancing my career. Any guidance woud be greatly appreciated!

Hey buddy

I am actually JPM IBD Ops analyst at DE office.

This place....to be honest not good. I am trying to break into either BB/MM IBD.

FT mostly does not appreciate the Ops and your exit opps are pretty limited. You will probably bounce around within purview of Ops world.

To change this, you need have MBA as career changer. Time-to-time, I am lukcy to have some IBD interview either at BB or MM (Like BarCap or Baird) but they don't know what Ops is. They don't appreciate.

However, I would chose JPM Ops over commercial real estate.

Ask me if you have more questions.

Thanks for the response...What type of exit opps are there for you in ops and what does a typical career progression look like in terms of salary and roles?

Newark, Delaware is the worst town I've been to, both in terms of people and in terms of things to do. May God have mercy on you if you end up there.

Yeah, I agree it's absolutely terrible. Also, the way the RE market is raging it might not be the worst place to be right now.

Ah. Not too familiar with that. I haven't been back there since I went to visit a friend of mine at UD a couple years ago. It was like a real life animal house (good thing), but 99% of the people I met legitimately had to have 2 digit IQ's.

Sorry, I was unclear. I meant the RE market in the overall U.S. is on fire not the Newark area. I was just saying I prob would rather be working in RE than Ops in Newark basically.
