Life after consulting?

Long story short, I'm a third year post-MBA consultant at one of the big 3, I just used my bonus to pay-off the last of my student loans, and now I want off the hamster wheel. Looking to retire my wheelie suitcase and SPG AMEX for good.

I'm well aware of the typical exits form my position, but haven't yet found a path that looks appealing. Definitely not interested in PE or any other path that will necessitate continuing the 70+ hour per week at work lifestyle. Based on my experience working with clients, the typical F500 corp dev or corp strat exits also look pretty unappealing. About ready to prepare an app to the MIT media lab PhD program. If only it didn't mean living in Boston on 25K per year :(

Any former consultants here who have done something more out of the ordinary willing to share stories? Especially interested in hearing from anyone who has gone on to do something design/product focused.

Thanks!

2 of my former class/roommates went MBB after undergrad. The two of them left their respective firms and founded a holding company together, which they dissolved after about a year. Now one works as the COO of an internet startup, and the other is the president of a small construction company.

Did the one start the construction company or did he have experience in that way back pre-mbb? Interested to hear
