New Header Live but Not Done...Version 1.0

Hey guys, you may have noticed that we have just launched a new header to try and bring us closer to a Web 3.0 look. Less clutter, etc.

It may take a while to get used to and we still have some cool changes to bring to it, but I think once we're done you'll be very happy with the change.

Our goal was to #1 reduce clutter, #2 make the design cleaner like thenextweb.com (more on that to come)

Next we will likely be doing away with the user bar along the top of the site and replacing it with a simple "Notifications" icon in the upper right (to show when you have a PM) and show you your user stats when you hover over it...

More coming this week and next...stay tuned.

Thanks,
Patrick

I know you're not finished, so I may be going over some things you'll get done:

1) border around the top nav bar 2) separate dropdown for WSO blogs. Have the top blogs show up the same way you have top groups 3) add top nav links to WSO Store and WSO Discounts in a different color (the white background color of forums) and different border. Will help to have them stand out a bit. 4) the mentors link shows up with 2 of the social media icons from last iteration of site

Oh, one other thing. Might be interesting to replace the Start Discussion button on the forums main page with a Join Chat button. The two Start Discussion buttons = redundant

Not sure if this is the place to post it, but my personal bar at the top of the screen doesn't display icons. I took a screenshot and saved it at the following location:

Personally I can deal with it I just thought I would bring it up

Also, that being said, like the new banner!

  1. Disagree for now, but maybe once we get rid of the white user bar along the top we can enclose it somewhat and make the design still work...

  2. Top blogs rotate a lot and will be tough to maintain, but could be a good idea for sure.

  3. More nav items = more clutter. And disagree on the more colors. We are trying to clean/de-clutter and make consistent theme throughout to make it a more pleasurable experience. That especially means a consistent color palette (notice the ugly Social share icons gone).

Even the Search bar is going to go in version 2.0 and be replaced with a white search icon over the blue that slides left when someone clicks on it to reveal a search bar (see http://thenextweb.com/ as an example)

  1. This should be fixed if you clear ur browser cache...control - f5

Thanks for the suggestions...think our vision is pretty different though :-)

decluttering the right hand side might be worthwhile... not sure how you or others feel but I feel like you could pull things like banana rankings, polls, upcoming events, etc into their own dropdowns... would give it a more sleek, minimalist look and could also free up space for other content / ads etc... I feel like since you have to go to another page to view the full detail anyway that condensing and decluttering could be an additional benefit...

Ok, version 2.0 of header is complete. We added in a bit more spacing to give the header some more breathing room, made the menus larger / easier to read, added in a Follow Us menu (no more ugly social icons) and replaced the "About" with "i" for information and replaced the entire search bar with a sliding jquery search icon (again, cleaner).

Next stage is to get rid of the white navigation bar along the top and replace it with 2 new icons that will be on the right side of the blue menu bar (will make things even cleaner and save more vertical space, so you just have the blue nav bar along top)...

  1. Bell Icon - This will be where you can see your notifications (PMs, new status/rankings, etc)
  2. Monkey Head/Profile Icon - This is where you can see all of your user data (% profile complete, bananas, WSO Credits, Rank, Status, Industry) and link to your profile to edit profile areas.

...but these changes will likely have to wait. we messed up search on mobile when making this change so that is fix #1 as well as checking into our xml sitemap issues...

After the WSO Conference, we will be back on these improvements full strength and hopefully by mid July we have the new header completely done.

Thanks for your patience, Patrick

I likee, I likee a lot. Mentors still shows up with social media icons for me, though

EDIT: LIES, mentors does not show up with social media icons for me. Stupid computers.

Might be nice to have the header locked in place (like freeze pane in excel), not sure.

yes, this is coming...even better, when you are reading / scrolling down it will disappear, but as soon as you stop for a bit or scroll up a tiny bit it will appear. this is coming in v 2.0...

This will be awesome.

Another suggestion from me - the dropdown menus for Recent, FAQs, and Groups are fairly short which is nice, but whenever I mouse over the "Forums" menu, I have to scroll down to read every option because the list of forums is so long. It would be great for those of us on laptops and with smaller screens if the Forum menu dropped down as two columns so that it is shorter in length.

This may not be an issue for lots of people, but just throwing it out there.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

some big changes coming to the header HOPEFULLY by end of day today. There will be no more white nav bar along the top and 2 new white icons in the blue nav bar along top...

I think you are onto something here with the decluttering the right sidebar...will definitely give it some thought once we make some more progress with header.

Ok, new header live... http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/new-wso-header-design-version-20-…

Thanks for feedback

Going Concern:

The profile dropdown is getting cut off in iPad, forcing you to manually zoom out or fiddle with screen position to see it. One way to fix would be to have it stretch to the left instead of the right.

we now left aligned the drop downs for most of the icons on the upper right side. They still getting cut off on ipad?

Thanks!
