I think embedding an IRC channel is the best way to go - I'd love to be able to use a chat client to connect, rather than having to chat in my browser.

Think for a second. Is this something that is vitally important, that needs to be on the front page? More people viewing and commenting on this will have zero effect on WSO implementing it. Is this some thought-provoking thread? Does it contain critical information? Or is it two guys asking for chat, and the site owner saying it's coming? I also moved it because it displaces the title post, introducing WSO.
