Staying on the Radar

So last year I got a few good IB connections from recruitment meetings, and I have stayed in contact with all of them. This fall I plan to try for an internship, and hopefully they will be willing to help me out.
However, it has been a little while since I have talked to any of them. A lot of the networking tips that I have read online say that it is a good idea to send them an email every few months so that they don’t forget who you are. The problem is that I don’t really have any questions that I need to ask them...
Is it really a good idea to just make something up so that you have an excuse to talk to them? That seems a little rude. What have you guys done to keep in contact with your connections over longer periods of time? What do you say to them?

Don't annoy people, especially people that are contacts and not friends. The guy who bugs you every 2 months when networking is the intern that will bug you every 2 hours at work. I would limit contact to informational interviews 3-6 months before, then a quick chat/request for resume review (which might get you a forward) just before recruiting deadlines and then inform them if and when you get an offer you want to take. If you have something related and interesting (i.e. you have a stock pitch you put together for an investment conference, worked with a prof to write a case study/research paper on the industry their group covers) maybe reach out to guys you think will appreciate it with a quick summary, but that's it.

You seem to have decent social skills, rely on those and not on networking advice from blogs and you'll be fine.
