To those who applied / went through GS spring program, LB rotational, JPM honors, MS s&t sophomore
Sorry if the title is too long or the question is redundant. I'm a sophomore and I applied to GS spring program, LB sophomore rotational, MS S&T sophomore summer internship and JPM Honors program. I was invited for an on-campus interview by GS, LB, and JPM. I'm still waiting for MS and citigroup to reply later this week perhaps. I have a second round interview with SEO also. I have several questions:
How many rounds of interviews do these program entail?
Just out of curiosity, do most who apply receive invitation to interview?
Any advice?
I really want to land one and I know it's very competitive but I'm praying really hard that I will be one of the lucky ones.
SEO usually entails 2 rds. The banks typically do 2 rds for internships. The sophomore programs are notoriously selective, given that most only interview 10-20 people per target for 1st rd and it's safe to assume that at least a couple hundred apply. When I went through sophomore interviews a few years ago, the first rounds were not that quantitative; they mainly wanted to see if you were a good fit, were properly motivated and excited about the job, and knew reasonably well what you were getting yourself into. Still, know as much technical stuff as possible (i.e. knowing the vault guide very well), but odds are, they won't ask you to tough valuation questions, unless you have previous finance coursework or work experience. Good luck.
you are very sick, congrats
^Thanks for that!
When I signed up for the interview, it had about 10 slots. However, I'm not sure whether only one person can be interviewed at each timeslot or if they have multiple people interviewing. What do you think?
Do you suggest the Vault Guide for S&T?
Anyone else received intervies?
Hey, I have interview with JPM. Got into SEO. Can't give advice about JPM (haven't interviewed yet). SEO i found a little softball (but i did ib, trading is probably more quantitative). Either way, have your stuff down. Sleep the night before (I didn't before SEO and it took me an embarrasingly long 20 seconds to figure a softball math problem- doesn't speak too well for that math major). Smile. Try to have rapport with yoru interviewers. Relax. Good luck
damn. looks like i didnt get an interview with JPM honors b/c my application still says pending. when are you guys going to interview for JPM?
^Pending on your career website or on the jpm website? i only applied through school.
Thanks for the advice! I'm having a mock interview tomorrow to see what it's like...
pending on my career website
^Oh maybe the preselection has not begun yet.
I just found I got one for Morgan Stanley too! Phew! Just waiting for Citigroup now. Anyone got one for Citigroup sophomore rotational?
P.S. I'm not writing this to brag so please don't feel offended. I'm just extremely pleased!
wow congrats. can you tell us a little about your experiences and what you put on your resume? I applied to all and got nothing haha.
Hi guys. I promise, there is nothing that is absolutely spectacular about my resume like saving the world from the subprime mortgage debacle hehe. In all honesty, the ones I see posted on this board are much more spectacular. In fact, my friends who applied to same program whom I think have/should have better things to put on their resume did not get all the interviews. So, Idk whether the ones who are somewhat do not have really as good of a resume get chosen so they can be taught or what. But, once again, I'm just truly blessed. Or maybe they cut off the people under 3.5 and choose randomly afterwards and I was lucky because seriously how much of an advance knowledge can a sophomore have?
Oh yes, does being a girl help? lol...
Anyways, I'm not rejoicing yet because this is only the beginning of the battles. I'm seriously very bad at interviews and it would take a miracle for me to actually land an internship.
Thank god. I just found out I got 1st round on-campus interview for JPM Honors. Holy crap...i have no idea what they are going to ask me..I seriously suck at interviewing, I only have had 1 interview before (it didnt go too well) since I am only freshman in college. I am sincerely asking you guys to help me. Has anyone went through the JPM Honors Program interviews? What do they ask? How do I get better at interviewing within 5 days? My interview is early next week and I seriously have no idea what they are going to ask me. Can anyone pleaseeeeee help me out? Thank you guys sooo much.
^Sorry can't help u there...Mine's Friday.
yes, for the less known sophomore programs, as little as 3-4 other girls from your school may have applied
but either way, congrats. your prospects are looking good right now
If you do not land a formal internship as a sophomore, I would encourage you to apply to boutique firms and do that route. You will get hands on experience, especially in small places, that can translate into a summer after Jr year.
For example, I am from a non target and last summer I worked in NYC at a small Investment Management firm with literally 4 people and myself. This translated to 4 BB Interviews, and an offer in December which I accepted (and have subsequently declined my other interviews). I was also contacted by GE and a few smaller investment banks that have relations with my school.
Seriously, these programs are great, but they're also new and small so keep your options open. Look on like craigslist for job posting - small hedge funds tend to post there.
Best of luck.
Hey, I interviewed last year for the GS Spring S&T program. I didn't get an offer, but a good friend of mine did. There was only 1 spot that I'm aware of for my school, and they interviewed the sophs on the same day as the junior's first rounds. I'm not sure if it works that way at every campus, but we have pretty strong ties to GS (we're one of their top 5 for university recruits according to Gary Cohn who spoke to us last week).
As far as the interview itself, it was only 1 round (for both me and the guy who got the offer), and totally behavioral. It was also one-on-one with an HR recruiter, not 2 front office people like you'd expect to get if you were doing GS first-rounds as a junior. Also, my friend who did the program got an offer for S&T Junior summer, so he's sitting back with quite an enviable internship lined up while most of my class is sweating it out every night as interviews are posted.
I hope this helps you out, and I would practice practice and practice some more on those behavioral questions. Just think, one short behavioral interview with a recruiter can lead to a summer and then to a full time S&T offer....
Best of luck.
^^Thank you so much! I hope my school (an Ivy) also has a spot for the Goldman spring program! I really really want it lol...You know if you go on the website of the GS interview information page, it gave the example of the Spring Internship as being two rounds. I hope it's only one round. I love interviewing with HR people! They're so nice!
Perhaps things have changed. Last year at my school (non-ivy target) we only had one round. I'm sure if you're at an ivy and they are getting in touch with you, theres a spot, its just yours to go get!
Just got my rejection email from GS. At least I know I need to improve my interviewing skills and also who my main competition will be next year.
Good luck to the rest of you.
