Oh, and being African American matters, a lot.

I thought it did, but my school tries to play it down like its nothing

  1. This thread is probably better suited for College Confidential. Come back here if you want advice on which one to choose based on placement and whatnot after you've been accepted.
  2. You'll get into all of them except for maybe UChicago due to their unconventional admissions. I would've put Northwestern as a maybe, but thanks to your URM status, you can probably aim higher than the schools you've listed.

I have no idea about the current state of college selectivity, but the one thing I noticed is that you put your athletic accomplishments too low on the list. Top academic credentials, which you seem to have, plus state level track and field should get you most places. Highlight the intellectual jock angle, and you should be gold. The other stuff is gravy. Best of luck, and keep up the good work.

wow thanks for all the support guys hahaha :) this is out of the scope of WSO but where can i work on my writing skills for college essays?

I'd suggest working with an English teacher at your school. Reach out to one, and ask them if they'd be willing to advise you on college essays. I was ignorant of this at your age (many years ago), but most people are willing to help out if you only ask.

You will get into Northwestern, NYU, University of Michigan and potentially University of Chicago depending on how they look at your writing SAT. You will get in easily to all those schools. And don't believe people that race doesn't matter in college admittance. I worked for admissions before and they really look at race.

You have a really good shot at any non-ivy. Ivy is possible but a reach (almost always a reach).

Ivies are a different beast altogether though. As annoying/cynical as it might be for me to say this... being african american will help your chances.

Just about everyone who goes to an ivy has your background regarding test scores and clubs. I would see all of these as "making the initial cut" as opposed to why they should accept you. What sets you apart is excelling at a certain activity. To give an example, I was part of a highly competitive music group in New England (I would say at least 20% of the people I was playing with went on to Curtis/Julliard/Major music program), captain of the math team which won our school size bracket within the state (MA), and part of the chess team which won our regional division. I also interviewed a few kids for my school this year and all I can say is that the person with the most interesting extracurricular got an acceptance letter but probably not the most "school smart/study hard" one.

Also: I would say at least 50% of the people who graduated in my year for this music program made it into an ivy or equivalent. It was pretty disgusting actually.

It most certainly will matter, and means you have a completely realistic chance at places like HYPS. The number of black guys with SAT scores like yours and good grades is frighteningly small. DO NOT FEEL BAD about using this to your advantage.

I'm being completely serious here. Aim high.

@7xEBITDA: No. I think my only chance to do it was freshman year (made all-state that year). From what I remember they do it once every two years or three years (so long ago)? I didn't do school band in junior/senior year for more AP/Honors classes and couldn't audition as a result. Always got one of the first two chairs in district though (doesn't mean top two since I think they divvy up the top 4 or so between top 2 chairs and orchestra).

FWIW I vaguely remember this girl who was like 2x better than me being seated very high there. Yea... she was an absolute beast. Out of the people I knew the only one I considered around her level went to Julliard. She went to an ivy.

I was given detentions my freshman year because my phone went off in class during a test, so on my discipline record, it says "student did not observe exam procedures". Will that count as academic dishonesty / ethics code?

Do you have any reason to believe that this will be sent by your high school to your prospective colleges?

I'm not sure, I thought all colleges automatically view the discipline record.

Dude, you are black and have an amazing GPA and SAT. Schools love people like you. They can admit a minority and raise their GPA and SAT averages, essentially killing three birds with one stone. Best of luck to you!

Can't see my parents arguing with me over that, I guess I'll give it a try this fall ^_^

So I read your post and was like eh you got a pretty good chance at getting in those schools with your stats + accomplishments.... then I saw ur Black.

DUDE you are shorting yourself, you have a shot at pretty much anywhere. For the colleges that have boxes that say "Additional Info," just write, "Did I mention I'm Black?" You are golden, ezzzz.

Can I get into Northwestern, NYU, University of Michigan, or University of Chicago with this resume? Or any other target schools?

SAT 2250 (math 800 reading 760 writing 690)
Math II 800, Physics 780, taking US History this year
ACT 32
GPA 3.8/4.0 unweighted (B in English for both 9th and 10th grades)
All Honors and AP classes
APs: Physics, Chemistry, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Economics, US History, European History
Extracurriculars: Usher at my church for 5 years, Student Government 4 years (class president 9-11, treasurer 12), Journalism (financial column editor), National Honor Society 2 years, California Scholarship Federation 2 years, Science Olympiad 4 years (secretary 12), Future Business Leaders of America 3 years (president 12), Varsity Track and Field 9-11 (state runner up in 100m relays, MVP 9-10)
Summer Programs: attended the Economics for Future Leaders at Yale, and hoping for the Dartmouth Bound summer program this year.
I had a minor infraction on my discipline record as well, but i'm not sure whether or not it went on.

And if it makes a difference, I'm African American; people tell me this does or doesn't matter but I'm not sure.

Dude, you are probably in the top 100 black SAT scorers in the country. Even if the rest of your application was just mediocre you would still have a shot. But the rest of your application is also top-notch. You are a shoo-in at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, MIT, and every other school in America assuming that Affirmative Action is not overruled in the coming weeks See the article posted below in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.

In a given year (2005 in this study), 1200 black students in America score a 700 on one section of the SAT (on the old test of math + verbal, which is today reading + writing, which you averaged a 725 on). You did that essentially on both sections of the old test by a significant margin.

http://www.jbhe.com/features/49_college_admissions-test.html

To put it bluntly, you might as well just tell people you go to Harvard now.

All we need to do is show a little class, a little sophistication, and we’re in like a dirty shirt.

well i have a C+ on my art class that i took at a community college transcript, next to As for the spanish classes.... will that be my undoing?

No, if worse comes to worse, don't submit your cc classes. I wasn't strong enough in my advice above, you should be able to write your own ticket. Apply to any schools that interest you, plus a couple of backups, and you are golden. Also, at any of your top schools, you should reach out to the track coach. You might not get a scholly, but they may help you get in.

but I need the cc transcript for my language credit & art credit & im not running track this senior year, would that also be a problem if i try to reach out?

So let me get this straight, a high schooler has a ER tag... What are the reqs to get a tag? This is a good example as to why you take 99% of things said here with a grain of salt.

This has to be a serious bit of trolling.

what? i wanna do equity research.... im not an analyst. all my other questions are me asking questions about being an analyst because that's what im curious about going into. no trolling, i just have questions. am i not supposed to put a tag on my profile until i get the job? if so, i can remove it.

Don't worry about the previous post, there will always be people who discount the validity of posts on WSO forums, simply because you have no proof. However, most of the people who have replied to your topic have done so with good judgment and have encouraged you to elevate your current goals and apply to schools in the upper echelons of post-secondary studies. Your race makes you unique among applicants with same academic achievements/ extra-curricular activities/ SAT range and that advantage alone may get you into HYPS. 3 years ago I was in a similar position as you (I'm also black) and got into a top school in Canada(I'm Canadian) and I have never looked back. Take a serious look at all of the Ivies specifically the smaller schools like Dartmouth, Brown, Yale and Princeton.. attending a smaller school can be very advantageous academically and socially in undergrad. If money is a problem make sure you apply for as many scholarships as possible !

Keep it together and you will go far..

Why not just run track this year?

It would only be a problem if you get into a school with some help from the athletic department and then you decide not to run later. They would only help you if they thought you would be joining the team once you were a freshman, as a walk on or otherwise. In my experience it's not all that difficult to walk-on to college track teams, if you have any level of talent. Sometimes a positive call from a coach (at the school that you are targeting) can differentiate a candidate in the eyes of the admin people. They'd only do that if they thought you were serious though, if you aren't I'm guessing the coaches are smart enough to see through that.

thanks again to all of you :D my main concern at this point is still the CC transcript :/
