What are you watching on HBO now?
Looking for some suggestions after Westworld has come to the season end. I'm looking forward to Big Little Lies, which looks pretty interesting. I also have Netflix, but find myself generally liking HBO shows more. Suggestions?
Edit: I also am a sucker for crude humor. I seem to heavily prefer American Dad > Family Guy tho.
True Detective (up to your discretion for season 2), Game of Thrones, VEEP, Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the new Pope show coming next year looks interesting
The Young Pope seems very interesting. I had hopes for High Maintenance based on a rather fresh perspective, but I actually found the web series that they had released before the pilot more enjoyable than the show itself.
I felt the same way about High Maintenance. I felt it was a MUCH better web series than show. I lost interest by episode 5.
Pretty excited for The Young Pope. Trailer made it seem like HoC meets The Borgias
never got to see Bill Simmons' show except for the short clips on youtube, was it any good?
i know he's still signed with hbo so he'll be back with something better
It was terrible. I tried watching it but Bill Simmons just comes off as awkward in that interview/production style. He needs to stick to writing insightful columns and producing sports documentaries/specials.
What have you seen? I would definitely check out some of the older shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Oz, and Six Feet Under.
EDIT: I also really like Vice and Vice News Tonight. Both are excellent.
I'm re-watching the Sopranos for like the 4th time. I'm starting to think I have some sort of weird obsession.....
Same. I see something different every time I rewatch it.
"You're not gonna believe this. The guy killed 16 Czechoslovakians. He was an interior decorator."
I actually have never watched either The Sopranos or The Wire. I get distracted watching multiple shows at once and prefer to finish one. I've heard The Wire is fantastic, think I'll start with that one.
I would definitely check those out then. They are arguably the two best TV shows of all time.
The Wire is phenomenal, but it can get really slow, which is why many quit after season one. Season four is about the best piece of TV you can find.
Sopranos > The Wire
2 shows that ran their debut season the same night as Westworld, Divorce and Insecure were actually pretty funny. Can't wait for next years new seasons of Silicon Valley, Veep, CYE, and that new Pope show
in addition to the others mentioned, The Leftovers is highly underrated, same with Deadwood.
The Leftovers is absolutely fantastic. What a dark show.
Deadwood is great. Runs a bit out of steam though in season 3... That damn actor group. I feel like there were so many random character side stories at the end with no clear purpose.
Currently: Silicon Valley, Ballers, Westworld, Vice Principals, High Maintenance, The Night Of and Game of Thrones.
Watched: The Sopranos, True Detective (stop watching after season 1), Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Entourage, Bored to Death, Eastbound and Down, Vinyl, Rome, Hung, and How to Make it in America.
Now that I listed it all out... I'm starting to think I would have graduated undergrad with a FT offer if I didn't have an HBO subscription.
i still can't tell if nas did it or not...
Have you finished to series? I don't want to spoil it you haven't by what I think.
I believe How to Make it in America was ahead of its time...the combo of Cam and Kappo was always hilarious scenes.
I miss that show...
That's one of my all-time favorites. I loved the cast. The writing became a bit of a drag, though.
To give Showtime a bit of love as well: I have recently discovered and enjoyed Ray Donovan, Billions, & Homeland.
Highly recommend Westworld
The Leftovers is awesome. I'd highly recommend checking it out, it is one of the best Drama series on tv right now. Great characters, lots of suspense/mystery, very well written and acted. The Wire is arguably the best of all time and is certainly a must-see but it seems like most people sort of already know that (I procrastinated on watching it for so long after hearing tons of good things, was blown away when I finally watched it.)
The Crown on Netflix is amazing. It's Netflix's most expensive drama produced (I think the figure was like ~$10MM per episode) and definitely worth watching if you're into history at all. As a forewarning, it's a historical biography so it can seem slow-paced at times.
I really really like this show. You're right about the plot being slow, but somehow the acting/dialogue/set keeps things interesting
Show Me a Hero - produced by the same guy who did The Wire. It's a miniseries, so less commitment than The Wire but still good stuff.
Insecure and Westworld for me. Insecure is one of the better shows regarding relationships and regular ass human interaction that I don't see displayed a lot on TV now.
It's not on HBO, but I found "search party" to be quite enjoyable.
