I'll be starting a grad scheme in september in London and was wondering what might be a cool place to live close to liverpool street station. Ideally, I'd like to be able to go to work by foot... Do you have any idea of the price range and cool neighbourhoods?

Really depends on your budget. Some decent places that you can walk to from there, or a little further afield there are some nice spots too if you are prepared for a couple of stops on the tube...
Starting at RBS, UBS or DB? There are a lot of options in Shoreditch (albeit it is not THE most amazing neighborhood in comparison to some others, but considered 'up and coming') or if you want even closer - Spitalfields or on Commercial Road (all of these are more or less the same area). In short, anywhere slightly to the East from the City/Bishopsgate for you.
EDIT: Price range - depends entirely whether you want a studio flat to yourself or are you willing to share - you probably won't find a nice studio for less than £1,200/month, but you could get some great options in a 2 bedroom apartment for £800/month or so.
The tube is so quick and easy! Clapham is an awesome place and you can take the Northern Line which is admittedly horrendous but gets you from Clapham Common to Bank or Moorgate (20mins) where you can either go one more stop to Lpool St or just walk there (5mins). Good nightlife, fairly safe, not too expensive (£600-800 a month is fine, you can spend more though!) All your shopping/pub/restaurant needs too. The common is good for running and sport too!
The thing to be aware of when looking at your commute is how far you are from the station, get the City Mapper app on your smartphone and when looking at a place pop the address in and pop your work address in (set your arrival time - this is important as obviously it's a lot busier in the morning!) and it will tell you all your options with regards to transport.

Clapham could be a suggestion, but if you're in an M&A team, the commute alone will drive you crazy. Huge crowds there in the morning usually.
I'd suggest somewhere along the lines of what TheFamousTrader suggested if I were you. If in a less hour intensive team however, Clapham could be good.

Very true about the commute, the key thing and the OP is the only person that can make this decision is how much weight you put on commuting vs your home & surroundings, it's a huge ball ache but I personally think it's worth it. I also only work 8.30-6.30 on average, so it's less of a big deal for me as I can actually enjoy the area in the evenings.

Thx guys for all your inputs. I won't be in an M&A team but in DCM, so hours won't be as extensive (it'll still be much more than 8:30 to 6:30 though). I already thought of shoreditch and everything east of liverpool street, but I'm not sure of where to find flatshares (as in using which websites?). Also, what do you think of Old street?

Sorry only just saw this, if you're going to use that spare room website look about two months max before hand, there are so many places and the turnover is huge so the earliest lettings tend to be advertised about 8 weeks in advance, majority are more like 2-4 weeks in advance! Good luck.
Earls Court / Victoria have decent prices if you share. I was paying £800 / head as a 1st yr in IB with 3 others flatmate in Pimlico.

Yeah, I think walking to the office might not be that reasonable. I think having a direct tube line or 1 change tops is more than enough

For flats, look on this website: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/ extremely exhaustive and the prices are exactly what you can expect to pay.
In terms of working out commute times, use this http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ you can put in the exact postcode (Zip code) and it will spit out the commute time, it is pretty accurate although a little conservative. Note on the advanced search you can plan trips at different times e.g. morning commutes.
'not to far away from where something's going on on the weekends' - don't think your going to have time mate. lol kidding.
Around Baker St probably meets most of your criteria, its on the Jubilee line so you will be able to go directly to CW and your friend will also have a very good commute from there as well (15 mins). Gumtree is the equivalent of craigslist if you want to go down that route, definitely not a rental market that is as heavily brokered as manhattan. Send me a message if you have any questions.

I opened a similar thread on The Student Room - one guy came up with the Tower Hill neighborhood. It's in reasonable distance from our firms and well-connected by public transportation. Will also have a look at that.
Limehouse
Don't live in Limehouse. Just looked at flats there. Not pleasant. Try and get somewhere on the DLR line as this will take you straight to Canary Wharf or to Bank for the City. I'd recommend Bow, Stratford, Islington, Poplar and Isle of Dogs.
Use Rightmove, Gumtree and FindaProperty.
You looked at the wrong flats then. If you had looked round any of the flats around the Basin or with river views you'd realize how misguided your assessment of Limehouse is.
You can't recommend Stratford, Bow or Poplar and say Limehouse isn't nice, obviously need to stretch your budget somewhat.

Hey all,
I'll be moving to London for work this month and my office is in Richmond. For the sake of convenience for work, I've considered living near Hammersmith or Chiswick -- near the tube station. At the moment my best idea is Baron's Court since it's on the District and Piccadilly lines.
I'm a young professional so I'm looking to be as close to central as possible, but within commutable distance from work.
Any and all advice is appreciated and welcome! If you have any suggestions on other areas to live, given my work location, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Dude what's in Richmond? Honestly curious. Live on / near the overground, don't wana rely on the district line for out there.
If you're willing to commute from Baron's Court and you have the budget, you could also shoot for the South Ken and Gloucester Road tube stations. That means you could live in the area south of High St. Kensington (I used to live there but my office was in Mayfair-I used to live between High St and the Cromwell Road and loved it-say hi to the Devonshire Arms for me) and walk to the Gloucester Road or Earl's Court station, the neighborhoods south of there (Earl's Court itself? meh), or anywhere near the South Ken station. There are a lot of younger people in the area and it's an easy tube/bus to get into Covent Gardens/Soho at nights and weekends and not a horribly expensive taxi ride late at night if you don't want to take the drunk bus.
