Bonus Bananas June 14, 2013

1) 39-year-old ex of retired 83-year-old Wall Street exec is now on welfare — and thinks she deserves more $$$ (NY Post) - Now I'm not saying she's a gold digger... Heartwarming story here. Side note: if you've been in the business 52 years and you've only got $26,000 to your name, you're doing it wrong.

2) Rupert Murdoch files for divorce (CNN) - Must be the season. Here's another May-December romance gone sour. What do you wanna bet ol' Emperor Palpatine finds himself a nice 22-year old slammer next?

3) Scaramucci Seeks Money for Manhattan Hedge-Fund Hangout (Bloomberg) - Mooch has the right idea here. What New York needs is a 1980's Gordon Gekko-type hangout where even the back office troglodytes can feel like somebody special.

4) Paulson Gold Fund Falls 13% In May, Down 54% In '13 (FIN Alternatives) - Jesus. I mean...Jesus. 54%? That's almost half! I don't even...Jesus.

5) Everything I Needed to Know About Business I Learned from Watching Game of Thrones (Forbes) - Interesting little piece written by a hedge fund founder. Wonder if Stevie Cohen finds the Iron Throne a might prickly these days...

6) Business Grads to Wall Street: Drop Dead (Wired) - Maybe the worst kept secret in B-school. The bloom is definitely off the Wall Street rose in favor of tech. It'll be fun to see what happens when that bubble pops.

7) Is Weed Really Bad for You? (Rolling Stone) - No.

8) Keith Richards: A Pirate Looks at 70 (Men's Journal) - This is who they should've asked about the weed. Keith's probably too old to have any die hard fans on WSO, but his level of hedonism has always served as an inspiration to me. It took falling out of a tree onto his head to get him to quit co****e. He is the original "rock star".

9) GLASS STOPS ANTI-SOCIAL DRINKERS LOOKING AT THEIR PHONES (The Drinks Business) - I get the concept. I even support it. But what happens when you spill your beer all over your phone? Plus, imagine explaining to your boss that you had to blow off his call because your phone was holding up your beer glass. Actually, that's pretty baller now that I think about it.

10) George Takei's Facebook Ghostwriter Apologizes (Mashable) - Anyone who "Likes" Star Trek alumnus George Takei's Facebook feed will attest to how funny and topical it manages to be several times a day. So a lot of people were shocked that it wasn't George writing all that stuff. My question is: so what?

Video of the Week:

If you suffer hangovers with any sort of frequency, this video is for you. It describes the science behind hangovers, and why the headaches are so godawful. It's probably not enough to make you quit drinking, but forewarned is at least forearmed. Bottoms up:

That's it for this week, guys. Let me know what you think about this week's Bananas in the comments, and have a spectacular weekend!

9) we all have two phones these days anyway....two beers?

4) Paulson Gold Fund Falls 13% In May, Down 54% In '13 (FIN Alternatives) - Jesus. I mean...Jesus. 54%? That's almost half! I don't even...Jesus.

Yeah but what you don't understand is that once the entire financial institution collapses my gold will have value and your paper money will be worthless!!!! Until then? Well, I guess.... I mean, it's still valuable you guys. Right? Anyone? Ron Paul for President blah blah blah

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

2) Out of curiosity, I googled photos from around their wedding and photos from now... two things I noticed: a) she got considerably hotter as she aged; and b) he did NOT age well...

I get it, he's unbelievably wealthy. But, at the same time, she is currently way too hot for him. She could snag another guy (wealthy or not) no problem who is much younger and better looking than him (not to mention the money she stands to make in the divorce settlement). Him, he'll end up with a younger (but much more haggard) gold-digger... or, alone (Mr. Burns, anyone?)... just my two cents

Anyone else pretty disappointed all the science talk didn't end with a 'oh you don't want hangovers? all you need is X and Y!'

Ah well. Back to eating a rare flank steak and sleeping with wet socks on to dispel early morning cognitive demons.

exactly, when it came to telling us something we didn't know, big disappointment.

(6) To your comment, Eddie: Once MBA graduates start pursuing something en masse, you know the end is near. It's funny how when something is currently Zeitgeist-y and popular, no one talks about things like "social value" and the like. It's only ex-post (i.e., after the housing bubble) that people say, "WHY WERE SO MANY BRILLIANT MINDS JUST 'MOVING MONEY AROUND' AND SLICING AND DICING UP RISK?"

I imagine something similar happens in the next 4 or 5 years. "WHY WERE SO MANY BRILLIANT MINDS JUST FOCUSING ON MAKING THE SAME SOCIAL NETWORK/CREDIT CARD PAYMENT APPS/MOBILE GAME/ETC.?"

Basically: My point is to remember that people are idiots who remember their past selves as a lot more brilliant than they actually were, and that you should do you when it comes to making a living.

(9) I've stopped pulling out my phone, checking email/Twitter/Facebook, etc. for a while now. It's embarrassing how much that shit has re-wired our brains and changed what constitutes acceptable social behavior. Aside from texts/calls I need to make, or when I'm on the can, I have now limited my smart phone checking to once a day. I highly recommend it.

What a ridiculous story. If I were a judge, I'd tell her to fuck off. Literally.

And yea, he clearly isn't doing something right. I did a search and found nothing on Bruce. Anyone know where he worked or what type of career he had?

This. I've deleted most social networking apps from my phone. I check FB/et al maybe once a week now. It's amazing how much more I accomplish/do when I'm not wasting time seeing what other people are up to (other than WSO, of course- ha)

Edmundo Braverman:

Sorry guys. I felt the same way but thought the info (especially the brain sucking) was still pretty interesting.

Hah no not at all, I didn't know about the sodium/mineral depletion so might try drinkning something with electrolytes rather than just water. I think the brain sucking thing will make my next hangover thst much worse when I think about what is going on!

I thought I saw that it mentioned he was a VP at Morgan Stanley... given his age, I assumed wealth management or possibly just MS exec other than IB...

Got it. If MS, certainly cannot be IB, S&T.
