Movie Talk and Hot Trailers

When I signed up to be a contributing author I wanted to write primarily about the business of media and entertainment. However, I've found that you monkeys like the tangible side of things better, such as sporting events, Oscars, and any other worthwhile events happening in the broader entertainment space. Soooooo this leads to me thinking about how to better drive discussion among us monkeys that don't want to think about numbers after spending too much time in Excel.

With that, I am embedding below several awesome trailers that have come out in the last couple of days in case you missed it:

Man of Steel

Star Trek Into Darkness

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Elysium

Do you guys notice a trend? All but one of them is sequel (I didn't even bother including Iron Man 3, Hangover 3, Kick Ass 2, or Great Gatsby [which is technically a remake] because all those trailers have been out longer than a week). It's been a problem many (namely hipsters) have complained about, but as more and more people go to theaters (see: Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises) to watch these franchises in action, the more inclined the studios are to make these films! Now they already announced a freaking release date for Fast and Furious SEVEN next year before the sixth one is even out!

I don't work on the creative side of things in media, but I'd like to think that instead of churning the wheels and spinning this cash maker I will do a better job at finding and promoting original content.

What do you monkeys think? Are there any original movies/ideas you'd like to see get put on the big screen?

Is it crazy to say those are the exact two movies I'm desperately waiting for?
BTbanker:
Wolf of Wall Street

Pain & Gain

I would say it's a little odd from my vantage point. Michael Bay is widely regarded as one of the worst directors in Hollywood. On the other hand, as for the other movie...love DiCaprio, like bordering on man-crush.

I would actually love it if you would write about your experiences in the finance side of entertainment/media/film industry. It is one of the few industries I am truly interested in, but unfortunately there isnt a lot of information or resources out there.

With Disney's news today, can't wait for:

2015: Star Wars Episode VII 2016: Jar Jar Adventures (for the kids!! don't forget the children!) 2017: Star Wars Episode VIII 2018: Chronicles of Fett 2019: Star Wars Episode IX Part I (in 3D) 2020: Star Wars Episode IX Part II (in 4D) and Princess Leia's Tattooine Trek (her own full-feature Disney Princess film! :O)

What is 4D going to entail?

You have a tap into my brain, obviously. I don't care if it's sacrilege or not, I will watch every Star Wars movie they ever make. I'm actually excited for all of these except the Jar Jar Adventures, so I'll probably only see that twice in the movie theater, unless it's good and then a few more times.

I was actually joking, but for better or worse I may have been correct on 5 of those 7 films. Goes to show how predictable the cinema production and release process has become. The news a day after my post:

God forbid Jar Jar ever entering public consciousness again. Meesa might just kill meeself.

Elysium trailer OMG OMG OMG. I just went from six to midnight.

Love the post OP, have a banana on me. I actually have a spreadsheet that tracks upcoming movies but have a separate section for sequel/superhero films, which I discount...Anchorman 2 notwithstanding. But often I don't catch trailers as soon as they come out, so this is great. I for one would love more of this.

To contribute, I'll throw in another trailer here. Not sure when it came out exactly but probably more than a week ago. Saw it in IMAX 3D when I went to go see J-Park last week. Looks pretty sick visually, and I have faith that Guillermo del Toro will not disappoint.

Here is another trailer that I liked. It's been out for a bit, but movie probably doesn't come out for a few months. As might be apparent, I'm a huge fan of sci-fi thrillers.

Anyone heard of this?

The Purge

For those that are too lazy to watch the trailer, it's basically a thriller about a world where unemployment is at 1% and crime is at an all-time low, and the reason for this is because one night each year, all crimes become legal, and literally anything goes.

I'm to much of a whimp to watch horror films. Those damn masks their wearing is what gets me. I hate paranormal/horror suspense shit. I'm a comedy/action or life/comedy kind of guy sometimes that "coming of age/realization" kind of thing.

Also, anything Pixar.

Don't judge me.

The industry has moved to avoiding original content. This has been a decade plus trend that is not going to change soon. The big money is in movies that people are familiar with, whether it be sequels, popular superheros, popular books, etc. Look at the all-time top grossing films in the US and the world. The Disneys of the world know where the money is at. Why do you think Disney bought Marvel? There is a lot less risk creating these types of movies. They have these familiar characters that will bring in viewers rather than other elements such as big stars. It is also a lot easier to market something viewers are already familiar with. Creating original content and marketing it is a difficult thing to accomplish.

When you evaluate media and entertainment companies, do you evaluate them on earnings or on original programming? The truth is studios will continue to cash in on sequels as they pay for the other original movies that are a part of the release slate, same as any other business that wants to be successful. No one expects Apple to stop the iPod/iPhone/iPad after the first version/generation. The market expects future versions of these products and the stock rises/falls based on the news related to the next generation/s of these products. Why would we treat movies any differently?
