Why does Bain send more to PE?
Why does Bain send more to PE every year than the other 2 firms? Is it just that more consultants at Bain want to move over or do PE firms want to specifically target Bain consultants because of their experience?
I know they have their PEG rotation, but what are the other reasons someone at Bain might have an advantage over someone at McK in making the transfer?
Thanks
Bain Capital, and it's cousins (Berkshire, Golden Gate, etc. which are founded by Bain Cap guys) are heavily affiliated with Bain, so I think for those firms Bain is better. For KKR/Blackstone I'm not sure if there is any advantage
as the above said, bain has the 'inside hookups'
Yeah, Bain only has an advantage over McKinsey at firms with a significant Bain connection (i.e. most of their senior partners used to be at Bain). At just about any other PE firm, when they do hire consultants, McKinsey might actually have a slight edge just from the brand equity (10xLeverage touched on this in his big thanksgiving thread).
What the others said plus while you are at Bain you can elect to do a private equity rotation (with a variety of pe clients, not just Bain cap).
as far as I know there is pe rotation to bain cap or other PE clients. its a whole different application process so obviously you have to get headunted to get into those places or have someone inside that will vouch for you. I think what you are referring to is the rotation within Bain's PEG which does work with PE firms in due diligence engagements.
That's right. Bain's PEG rotation does services for and with PE firms (due diligence, exit planning, portfolio value creation, sector strategy).

it's more than just where the partners worked...Charlesbank was co-founded by an ex-BCGer, but hires mostly Bainies.
Bain also sends a lot of people to PE because the company is hyped for this exit option in forums like WSO. So PE-keen graduates more likely end up there ;-)
To those who switch to PE from Bain, at what point do they switch? Two years/after the AC program or before?
Usually after finishing second year as an AC or after staying for a third year as an SAC and then going to PE.

Do PE firms recruit post-mba consultants from Bain? or just pre-mba people?
Actively. I've heard that a lot of Bain Consultants make it to PE
Short answer is yes. Try a forum search and relevant threads should come up.
even at the the post-mba level? I've heard that it's next to impossible to get a post-mba pe position without pre-mba pe experience. is this true?
Ya they do, bbut we are talking primarly at the ACI level.
is there no shot at the consultant level?
I think those that do make it tend to go to Bain Capital, an MBA wouldn't hurt either.
