Seeking guidance for masters programs - Profile evaluation

Hello,

I am turning to you for advice and insights regarding my search for an "elite" master programme. My goal is to pursue a career in M&A and possibly move into private equity. Below are my credentials and aspirations:

  1. Academic Excellence: I have a strong academic record with a GPA of 3.9/4.0, consistently making the Dean's List at a top-tier institution.
  2. Professional Experience: My experience spans six months between venture capital and investment banking (M&A in a middle bank), and I am poised to complete another three months in M&A at a leading elite boutique this summer.
  3. Athletic Achievement: I am a regional champion in my sport, reflecting my commitment and competitive edge.
  4. Leadership and Initiative: I have founded a significant association in a specific finance sector, demonstrating my entrepreneurial spirit and leadership skills.
  5. Strong GRE Score: My GRE results are notably high, underscoring my academic capabilities.

I am contemplating applying for an MBA 2+2 program at prestigious institutions like HBS, Columbia, Wharton, Stanford, and MIT, but I have reservations about my chances.

Currently, I am considering the following master's programs:

  • LBS Masters in Financial Analysis
  • MIT Sloan Master in Finance
  • HEC Master in International Finance
  • HEC/YALE M2M (for the added Yale credential)
  • Oxford Saïd Business School Master in Financial Economics
  • Columbia Master of Science in Financial Engineering

Additionally, I have a full-time offer from the middle bank where I have done the internship and an offer from an elite boutique for a summer internship.

I would greatly appreciate any advice, insights, or recommendations on how to strategize my applications, improve my profile, or any other programs that might align with my career goals.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there,

Sounds like you've got a pretty impressive profile! Your academic record, professional experience, and leadership skills are all strong points. Plus, your athletic achievements show a level of dedication and discipline that's sure to impress any admissions committee.

When it comes to the master's programs you're considering, they're all top-notch. However, each one has its own strengths and focus areas. Here's a quick rundown:

  • LBS Masters in Financial Analysis: This program is known for its strong focus on practical skills and industry connections. It could be a great choice if you're looking to hit the ground running after graduation.

  • MIT Sloan Master in Finance: This program is highly quantitative and would be a good fit if you're interested in a more technical role in finance.

  • HEC Master in International Finance: This program has a strong reputation in Europe and could be a good choice if you're considering working internationally.

  • HEC/YALE M2M: This dual degree program could give you a broader business education and the added prestige of a Yale degree.

  • Oxford Saïd Business School Master in Financial Economics: This program is known for its rigorous academic approach and could be a good fit if you're interested in a more research-oriented role.

  • Columbia Master of Science in Financial Engineering: This program is highly technical and could be a good fit if you're interested in roles that require advanced quantitative skills.

As for the MBA 2+2 programs, they're highly competitive but given your profile, I'd say you have a shot. Just make sure to really nail your essays and interviews.

In terms of improving your profile, it sounds like you're already on the right track. Just continue gaining relevant experience and maybe consider doing some networking in the industry.

Lastly, don't forget to consider the full-time offer and the summer internship you've been offered. Both could provide valuable experience and connections in the industry.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your applications!

Added Yale credential is a waste of time, FYI.

The cringe is so strong on this one. Way to show that you have 0 class and are insecure.

You clearly did not ask for help ONLY from people working In VC/M&A, you posted a question addressing everyone on WSO. You said your goal is VC/M&A.

Sure, I phrased my earlier comment in a “ribbing” way, but at its core the message is simple - if you want genuine feedback write in a succinct, condensed manner. Because no one will read through an overly complexly worded post.

Adults understand that due to any number of reasons you don’t always start where you want to be. Sure, audit is easier to get into than IB, but it’s still a fairly valuable experience that sets you up for life. But, I’m here because I do want to transition into higher finance and I’m working towards that. No shame in that.

Degenerates think that they’re better than someone else because of where they work. And if someone is in a “lesser” job their advice is worthless.

(We will ignore the fact that one year ago you were boasting in comments about how you already have an MSc in Finance from Bocconi. Doubt a 2nd one will make you more likeable)
