Is working at Wall Street really hard?
Would like to work for topic companies at Wall street, but heard it's really hard and tired, is that true?

Nah you basically just have to walk in and ask the receptionist if they're hiring. I think you start the same day so make sure to bring your work clothes
The receptionist most likely will provide him a fratagonia vest and a pair of deal sleds that same day, so I don't think he needs to bring work clothes.
100% don't need to bring work clothes. The receptionist also supplies you with a hermes tie and juul - so make sure you double down on pods
Nah dude its all models and bottles
As a Wall Street analyst, do you find it to be difficult and demanding? (Originally Posted: 08/03/2011)
I'm a senior at the University of Pennsylvania and I'm majoring in economics and minoring in math. I'm looking to be some type of analyst, but I've heard that analysts work like 80 hours a week. Is that true? Sure it's good pay, but I value leisure more than consumption, so I really don't want to work more than 40 hours a week. Maybe once in a while it's okay, but I don't want it to be a frequent thing. Are there any analyst positions that aren't very demanding and that come with very little stress? If not, then I'm thinking about being a high school math teacher. It may be a lower salary, but i get more leisure (e.g. no work over the summer). I'm also into music, so I need time to dedicate for that. Anyway, any info/suggestions will be helpful. Thanks!
Hahahahhahaha
Yeah dude, most jobs worth a shit will have you working more than 40 hours. Nothing like putting a UPenn degree to good use.
Lame troll.
the actual use of punctuation makes me think this isn't a troll. which just makes it even more sad
Here's a great opportunity for you:

I'm asking a serious question but all I'm getting are asshole remarks. But yet, I'm the one who's the troll? haha...fags!
Ok bro. Time for you to go work your 40 hours at Pizza Hut.
Weakest attempt to troll in a long time.
STFU pissAnt!
The short answer is yes, analysts - especially in investment banking - work 80 hours on a good week, with the average falling somewhere between 90 and 100 hours. Some in S&T work roughly market hours + a few hours in the afternoon and morning, somewhere around 60 hours per week. If you're hoping to keep yourself to 40 hours, Private Wealth Management is probably the best "typical" finance track for you.
Possibly the worst troll evar.
I'm NOT a TROLL!!
Be a high school math teacher
Yeah, I just might. Or maybe a trader, I heard they work less hours, but that it's more stressful.
You come to a wall street site and ask about working 40 hours? Man, go work at Taco Bell of something.
F500 is about 40
PWM is about 40
Now be gone kid. You either have down syndrome or are the worst troll ever.
That's because I'm new to this. I have no idea how Wall Street jobs work, which is why I'm asking questions. I only picked to major in economics because I'm interested in it, but not once did it ever cross my mind to work in Wall Street or business until just a few months ago (about 9). My original choice was to get a master's in math education, so that I can teach math. But i recently found out how many hours analysts actually work, so I began reconsidering again. This doesn't mean you guys have to insult people. Gosh, I'm only asking questions because of my limited knowledge of Wall Street. That's why this forum is here, right...to ask questions? SMH!
So you will never do anything unless it is easy and requires little hours?
Wow, set the bar real low dude.
Did I say that? I actually don't mind that much about the difficulty of the job. My main concern are the hours. If you've been reading anything I said, then you would know that I like music, and I take it serious. I need time to dedicate for my music. I CANNOT dedicate my whole life for some firm because of that. I want my life to be in equal balance of music and a job that makes use of my education. I cannot have only one. I need both. I LOVE music; i cannot disown it.
If leisure is all you value, be a teacher. Just don't resent us later for making money. Remember, we've put in the hours/work.
I never said leisure is all I value. I said that I value leisure more. Most people do and economic models agree with that. :)
Saying you want to rarely work over 40 hours per week is just lazy. Working 45, or 50, or 60 hours a week doesn't make you a "slave." And you'll be working something like that at any decent F500 job anyway.
FYI, high school teachers work 55 hours per week, but maybe you'll find it more rewarding. Either way, time to grow up and get off mommy and daddy's teet.
Hey asshole, I'm 27. After high school, I did music. So it's not an issue of being lazy. It's an issue of having multiple interests. I cannot dedicate my whole life for some job. I'm making money through my music as well.
I was under the impression that this is a serious website, but apparently I was wrong. There's nothing but immature kids here.
You're making enough money through music to pay for Penn without loans or help from your parents? Why the fuck would you even think about working in finance?
Why you wanna know how I'm financing Penn? If you must know, it's a combination of many things--loans, grants, and scholarship. And no, my parents are not helping. I'm doing everything by myself.
Whoa, you are 27 and don't know what you want to fucking do?
Dude, after 27 years of dicking around you still only want a candy ass 40 hour a week job.
Hahahahhahahahahahahaha
Yo, I created a thread about welfare and free cell phones. You might want to check it out, might be helpful.
Is it me? Or do you not know how to read? I want a "candy ass" 40 hr/wk job because I'm also doing music. I shan't repeat myself again. I'm not you...I'm into other shit. Education isn't my life bro. I was doing music for six years, had fun, but I always knew I wanted to go to college. My grades were awesome in high school. i started Penn at 25. My brother died when i was 18, and I fell into a deep depression, so i didn't want to go to college. I began making music to help with my depression and it hooked me. So there we go, a brief history of my life, all because I posted a little innocent question. Oh well.
And yes, I do know what I want to do. I wanna do music...BUT, i also want to make use of my education. The only question is--should I go into finance or into education? that's the part I'm trying to decide. I've seen many people who are unhappy with their jobs but choose not to leave because of the salary...I really don't want that to be me. I want my life to be happy, not miserable.
All i wanted was some help, but it only ended with a personal discussion of my life. Wtf?
Be a financial advisor/do PWM. hours are really good, not much prestige but if you're good you'll get paid well. Not really wallstreet per se though. S&T I'm assuming is just market time + some.
Aside from that, no probably not anything that'll get your 40 hour work weeks.
Thanks! I'll look into that too!
Just gonna say, saying you want a banker payroll and are only willing to work 40 hour weeks is gonna piss off a lot of people on here. Sucks what you went through ,but employers won't care if you want to continue pursuing your music, if your brother died, or anything bad. Trust me, some may empathize with you, but when I explained my freshman low GPA one employer I called back said he thought that I shouldn't explain it away because I should own up to it and that it made my problems seem like they could recur. So yea...
Thanks! I'll try it out, and if the analyst position ends up consuming too much of my time still, then I'll go into education. I'll probably teach community college level math, it earns more than high school.
F500 is ~60 hours if you have a job worth a shit just FYI
ok so maybe you're not a troll.
just to clarify, people aren't pissed because you don't want to work long hours. nobody really WANTS to work long hours... they think that doing so for a couple of years is worth it in the long run. it's just that anyone who has even HEARD of investment banking knows that the hours come with the territory.
your question is so ridiculously naive... did you REALLY do any research on the topic? did you even attempt to use this website's search function?
Did you even attempt to read ALL my comments carefully?
You don't seem to be thinking this through very carefully. You need a Masters to teach at community college and you get paid the same and work the same hours as a full-time high school teacher. If you work as an adjunct prof at a community college, you get paid even less than a part-time high school teacher for the same amount of work and your schedule is decided at the whim of the administration (i.e. you are a slave).
If you're making enough money to support yourself playing music, why don't you just do that and supplement with teaching music lessons? That allows you to work your own hours doing what you love.
Yes, I know I need a master's to teach math in community college. After I get my master's in applied math (or maybe math education), I will decide what to do for a stable career. I didn't mention it because I thought people would just assume that I was going to get a master's to teach cc. And it's not as you're saying. I know of a few full-time math professors at cc, and they usually teach 4 courses, and don't spend more than 45 hrs/wk on their job. They also have the right to take the summers off. Also, it's more money (on average) than being a high school teacher. But anyway, I'm not saying that I'm gonna teach, I'm still deciding. I might try out Wall Street and if I don't like it, then fuck that, I'll teach. It neither makes me nor breaks me.
Also, I do NOT want to be a full-time musician. I want to make use of my education as well, because i like math, and it's more stable. The type of music I do is underground, so I can't really live off of that permanently, especially when I'm like 50 or something. I also want to promote shows.
Look weirdo, why would you even fucking post this? If you "have done your research" as you say, you would have read the million threads on WSO discussing hours, shitty life, etc involved with banking. The fact you come onto an online forum and make yourself look like a dumbass, then give sad details of your life to strangers to make up for it is just fucking weird. All of us have been through shit, idiot.
This site loses credibility by the day with fucking idiots like you. Go teach and stay the fuck off of a WALL STREET discussion forum.
I posted this even after doing the research, because the research only tells it how it is from a general perspective. That's why it always says "average hours worked." I figured that by posting here, I'll be able to get individual perspectives. I guess I should've pointed that out, huh? Lol. And do you honestly think that I would search through this sites forum, hoping to come across a similar question? Absolutely not. It's much more efficient for me just posting the question again. I really don't care about the efficiency of the website.
As for the "sad details" of my life, I revealed them because I'm still a stranger to you guys. You don't know anything about me except that I'm an econ student at Penn. In actual physical life, I'm an introvert, so i don't go around revealing things about myself, which also explains why i don't much about Wall Street as you guys, even though I do go to Penn for econ. I don't hang out with other penn students. I can't stand them actually. Most of my friends are uneducated dudes who don't attend Penn.
Lastly, fuck you. Just out of spite, I plan on posting more shit on this site...especially things that people have posted already. Why? Because I'm a fucking asshole. Fuck you gonna do about it, bitch? Die slow.
