Bad to list yourself as having a "disability" on an application ?
Hey guys,
I randomly thought of this so I just want to hear opinions. I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have always listed my self as having a disability on mi internship applications, well because it is listed as ont of the disabilities. I was just wondering if you guys think this would help, hurt, or not affect my chances.
I have been told hurt because the employer will not know what disability and think it is something that can hold me back when looking at my application.
I have also been told it may help because they may need to hire a certain amount of people with disabilities to make it look like they hire "fairly".
Just a random thing I thought about while I come to the end of the work day.
Diabetes? Seriously? I'm pretty sure your pancreas not being able to efficiently produce insulin is of no concern to your potential employer. Do yourself a favor, and do not list your self as disabled. This could lead to a conversation on your "disability," and subsequently any shred of competency the recruiter thought you had disappearing.
I wonder if there are HR concerns with listing this as well. Absolutely leave it off.

I've never heard of quota for disability people. Only that we can't (overtly) take the disability into account on a hiring decision.
I see no upside in listing this unless you're applying for something which is explicitly for disabled people. Only downside.
There's no hard quota. However companies that want to be eligble for government subsidies and contracts need to meet certain "diversity" quotas. People with disabilities, racial minorities, females, and veterans count(which is the real reason for "veteran hiring initiatives" in some cases).

Say I was already a strong candidate, would admissions look at it in the sense of "Wow, this guy did all of this while having this challenge"? I'd appreciate any thoughtful insight. Thanks.
I don't think there's any general concensus on the matter, it probably depends on the schools you are applying to. I'd suggest talking with the adcomm counselors at the schools you're interested in. Good luck my friend!

Not that I know of -- I'm sure there were dyslexics in most top b-schools (people don't exactly disclose this fact openly to other classmates), but it also depends on the degree of the disability -- if it's significant enough to hamper learning or makes it extremely difficult to keep up with the rigors of an MBA program (severe dyslexia, Down Syndrome, MS, etc.) then it's going to be more of a disadvantage.
In short, if yours is mild, don't expect sympathy points trying to play it up.

Diabetes is a life altering disease, I don't know why people are acting like it's no big deal...it definitely counts as a disability.
That said, no way you should put it on your resume.

I'm sure you guys have seen it. It will ask you to select if you have any of several disabilities. Usually there are about 20 listed and they range from ADHD to mental retardation(not sure why anyone would admit to this on an IBD app).
What is this point of this? Is it an auto-ding if you select one? Or can your answer here be used to explain a less-than-stellar resume?
Don't they also say that they can't discriminate based on disability? How does that work for, say, mental retardation?

I think they are legally required to ask. Also, some banks offer some sort of diversity program stuff for people with disabilities. I know GS does. This can range from being wheelchair bound to whatever. Doesn't sound like a bad idea if you ask me. I am sure it could be pretty difficult to try and break in with some serious disability, but it doesn't mean that they can't do the work.
Kieran Prior has cerebral palsy and is completely wheelchair bound. He needs people to help feed him, but he was an awesome trader at Goldman in London. Now he just hangs out with his Hungarian babe girlfriend and buys professional football teams for fun.
Yea, I don't see why everyone is flipping out, it is listed as one of the disabiltities when filling out online applications I didnt choose to put it there.
