BarCap vs. Lazard

Hi,

I was a summer at BarCap and have a good chance of being the M&A analyst of my industry group. I recently received a generalist offer at Lazard for IBD.

Does anyone know what the hours are like at Lazard? I'd also like to hear general thoughts.

which industry group? You really can't beat lazard. But if you were doing nat-res M&A, that's another story. the hours are going to be little different, your doing banking and its not going to change at either place (give or take 10 hours). But you also need to weigh whether you want a BB or boutique experience

What is Lazard paying their 1st years, salary and signing

Barcap is a great place, but Lazard would definitely set you up better for top tier buy side shops. Unless you had some objection to working at a smaller place I don't think it is too much of a question that Lazard would give you significantly better exit opps than barcap.

JohnGHow would exit opportunties compare between Lazard and Lazard MM (technically it is one firm...)?

Not even close. Laz MM does not have a fraction of the exit opps as Lazard. Yes they are the same parent firm, but that would be like saying Merrill Lynch PWM is part of the same firm as Merrill Tech M&A.

To the OP: I would take Lazard over Barcap. Barcap is still considered 2nd tier BB (behind GS and MS, possibly JPM). Lazard is hands down the top boutique. From what I hear, Lazard's hours will probably be tougher than BarCap's, and the culture (assuming NYC) is a little more toolish. But you really can't beat the exit opps.
