UT Austin Business Honors Program

Just admitted to BHP at UT Austin!
How good of a program is it, and why?
Is it comparable to Wharton?
Would it be possible to get into a Harvard/Wharton MBA program from BHP?

Congratulations!

I'm a normal McCombs student, but I can offer some insight.

1) It really depends on what you're looking for, but BHP does offer the same opportunities that Wharton would, Investment Banking and Consulting, within Texas. You'll just have to do a bit more legwork. Wharton does have the caveat of being able to do PE out of undergrad. Plus, MBB hires them in droves. Corporate-wise, there isn't really a difference though. That being said, bang for your buck, McCombs BHP in-state can't be beat. I have a friend who got into Wharton but chose BHP because he loved Texas. That and the price tag completely sealed the deal.

2) I'm assuming prestige, but frankly nobody cares where you went to school once you graduate. Just look at the firms that recruit. Every company that you want is here. In my opinion, I wouldn't necessarily compare the two at all. They're quite different. Wharton is the business school as a whole within a private school on the east coast, while BHP is an honors program within the business school at Texas All the finance organizations here at McCombs are intermingled with normal and honors students. In addition, upper level classes are still intermingled with normal and honors students. So, it can be a little bit irritating. HOWEVER, my BHP friends love the core classes, and there is definitely an extra boost networking wise in regards to BHP. Also, some interview slots for companies are specifically reserved for BHP kids.

3) Dude, I've seen people from A&M, SMU, and ASU get Harvard and Wharton MBAs. Just get good grades, good GMAT, and do a decent career that fits you.

Hook 'em! And PM me if you have anymore questions!

  1. I looked it up. Sounds cool.
  2. It's probably better than standard UT Austin business? Hard to tell.
  3. No.
  4. I'm sure eventually. You really should be focused more on your grades and right out of school job though. Going directly from UG to a top 3 MBA program, or any MBA program, if you could even get in, would be a mistake.

Only friend I had get into that program did 2 years IB in NYC and is now in PE in SF, if the price difference is substantial (over 10k per yr) from Wharton I'd choose bhp with confidence. People like CRE who literally just looked up the program have no idea how good that program is.

I more or less said I had no idea how good it is, just that it isn't on par with Wharton. Not a big deal, really.

@CRE, if you don't know anything about the program - you probably shouldn't comment.

How good of a program is it, and why? BHP is a excellent program that is roughly makes up about the top 10% of overall McCombs. The average SAT score hovers ~1460+ and class rank is ~2% and most people have very strong extracurriculars. You will have access to the best professors and the program is organized into sections much like a MBA program. Top companies often times will only recruit BHP students at McCombs so if you are interested in top IB and/or Consulting, you basically have to be in BHP. As someone who works for MBB and have interviewed BHP students, I have always found the caliber to be impressive and comparable to those from our other target schools.

Is it comparable to Wharton? From a prestige standpoint, no. However, I haven't noticed much of a difference between BHP students that we hire vs. those from our more well regarded target schools such as Wharton or Columbia. The biggest different in my opinion is the depth of the class. At Wharton and Columbia, there are more qualified students from a percentage standpoint but the top students at BHP can and do compete very well. From a career standpoint, BHP will provide you with the opportunity to interview with MBB and a good number of the top banks. However, per my understanding - Wharton will open up more doors in the 2nd tier/mid market space.

Would it be possible to get into a Harvard/Wharton MBA program from BHP? Yes - absolutely. Getting into Harvard, Stanford, Wharton is all about working for the right companies assuming that you have the necessary stats (i.e. GMAT and GPA) and story. Therefore, if you are able to get a job with a company who is a leader in its industry (i.e MBB, Goldman/Morgan, Google/Facebook, etc.), then you will have a good shot. BHP will give you that opportunity and I personally know a good number of ex-BHP people who have gone on to attend top business schools.
