Calling GS MD - advice?

Dear Monkies,

I have a call with a GS IBD MD tomorrow. My mission is to make him recommend me for an SA interview. I cold-emailed him and asked for the call without really thinking about the content of the potential talk.

Any ideas, besides the industry specific questions?

Should I go straight to the point at the end, and ask him whether he'd be able to recommend me, depending on how he likes me?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Whenever I have one of these lined up, I look up a recent deal that the MD just closed and ask during the call if he or she can walk me through it. It shows your interest in the whole process and should endear you to the MD since you took the time to look up what he or she was doing as of late. Also, it takes up a sizable amount of time over the phone and MD's love talking about themselves and their accomplishments.

Talking about deals is a great tactic. I once sat in an MD's office for an hour in a half asking questions about a $4bn deal he just closed. But inform yourself beforehand and have good questions to ask; read the Thompson or CapIQ tearsheet, and try to look the transaction up in the news. For example, if there were multiple suitors for the deal, think about why some offers were rejected - sometimes the buyer won't have been the higher bidder, and often for stupid ego-related reasons.
