community college student... transfer... trading/analyst position??
So my plan, thus far, is working. I am planning on transferring to a decent university. Something like top 50-100, but not a target or really even a semi-target school. Now this is really just the beginning of my education. Eventually, I plan on getting a masters in finance from a better school. My concern is what exact feild I should break into. I love trading, but it's super competitive; furthermore, it has a low success rate. So what about financial analysis or loan officer? Something that I will be able to gain financial experience so when I start applying to grad schools I will look competitive? When I transfer I do plan on landing a few internships, God willing. I realise i'm not going to be a big shot or anything like that, and honestly I don't want to be in investment banking or something like that, although i'd take the job in a second LOL. To make matters worse I am a GED student and have no SAT/ACT scores. My plan is just to make a little over 100K a year after a few years experience. Ofcourse, if i get into a top grad school I could find a better job, but i don't want to get ahead of myself. So what do you guys think?
Y can't you blaze through community college and get into a 30-50 college or better? A 4.0 and member of groups may take you a long way, u never know... it seems as if your doubting yourself before u even begin.
because some courses I must take in CC to transfer to some of the top 50 schools would take me an extra year in CC.. because i have a GED i have to take remedial courses... im not doubting myself. I'm just trying to be realistic. I have a 4.0 right now. There is no relevant clubs. I already tried to start a finance club, but not enough people were interested.
I think you've got a good shot at one of the state-funded city universities- like Baruch, UI Chicago, or UW Milwaukee, and those schools can all get you hired into plenty of Chicago prop shops, where the real growth is going on in finance.
as far as transferring goes, i transferred from cc to a top 10 public university. If you spend enough time at cc they don't look at your SAT scores, and the fact that you have a 4.0 after getting your GED might play into your favor (i.e. pulling yourself up by your bootstraps)
Do yourself a favor, don't declare a major at your cc; just take a bunch of courses that transfer like intro to macro/micro, literature, CALCULUS (i got set back a couple semesters because i didn't take that at cc)
and like Bravo said, don't discount yourself. A 4.0 at community college + good rec. from professors + work experience/ extracurriculars = a good 4 year college
Keep your grades up at CC and you don't even need to finish your associates before you transfer. I transfered to a State University after 3 semesters at a CC and I also do not have SAT or ACT scores. Once you have some time put into a university you do not even put the CC on your resume.
thanks guys! problem with the calculus is i have to take remedial math courses. My advisor said i should just take calc for business. This would also save me a few semesters. I have to take two algebra courses, then trig, then pre calc, calc, etc... this would take extra time, and i literally hate math lol... I'm good in economics, english, and accounting though. Would it matter if i take upto calc 2 vs calc for business? I guess i could spend a few extra semester if need be to make sure i have a solid transcript.
I didn't like math either before coming to my university. I was in the same boat as you. Business calc might be fine (just check with your potential universities if it transfers) the reason i say calc is important is because at my school calc is a prerequisite for every 300 level econ course (my major). eventually you'll have to take it and it'll be easier at cc.
Like i said, it's not imperative that you take calc in order to transfer (i didn't take it at cc), it just makes enrolling for classes easier.
thanks. Shep i see you go to U. of Maryland... that school is on my list. When you transferred what was you GPA? how many credits did you transfer? What courses? Were you an instate or out state transfer? extra curriculars? work experience? lol sorry for all the questions.. just wanna know.. thanks.
I transferred last fall GPA 3.96 i had around 65 and about 56 transferred the courses were money and banking, intro to macro/micro, psychology, sociology, biology, art history, intro to programming, a couple others im out of state e.c. i played lacrosse at cc., volunteer firefighter, phi theta kappa honor society, volunteer lax coach at high school i did plumbing for a year before enrolling in cc and summer jobs.
No matter where you decide you might want to go, check their transfer matrix to see what courses transfer.
I just made the jump from CC, first, what state are you in? Many state schools have guaranteed admissions if you complete certain requirements at your CC. Might be worth looking into. Other than that, just be the best at what you do (not hard at all in CC, honestly I felt like I was trying to get a B or C half the time, arguing with professors about stupid shit they said and whatnot).
Graduated HS with a C+ GPA. Made the move CC --> Target --> BB IBD.
No troll shit.
Just fuckin' grind your heart out bro.
Just so you know his profile lists the following:
Industry: Investment Banking Status: Partner Sex: Male College / University: Harvard Degree & Major: Ph.D. Nuclear Reactor Physics, Minor: Brain Surgery GPA (rounded): 4.0 GMAT: 800 Location: Heaven
Yea yeah, obviously that's all bullshit.
I'm for real though.
What was you're CC GPA and credentials?
lol...there is no way in hell i'm staying in my state (PA)... I rather be in New York or Chicago like tommorow! I was looking at and talking to admissions at the following: Ohio University, Fordham, ASU, DePaul, Miami Unversity(Oxford), U. of Maryland, Seton Hall, Baylor, Syracuse, and Boston University. Note this is a complete list. I literally looked into all top 50 schools aside from top 10 and these are the only universities I have a good chance at including good GPA and course work. Would it benefit me to join Phi Betta Lambda? I'm pretty much set to join Phi Theta Kappa, but how about PBL? Unfortunately, these are the only relevant clubs at my CC pertaining to either business or honors.
and before anyone says PENN STATE please don't they do not accept community college transfers into their business program fricken bastards I KNOW. lol.
