Hand-written thank you letter plus a gift card, too much?

I've had several informational interviews with friends' friends and alumni who work at BB, associates, VPs and MDs. Some of them helped me a lot.

I'm thinking about sending a hand-written thank you letter with a gift card to each one of them before Christmas. Would this be too much? If not, which gift cards would you guys recommend? Probably with a face value of $50 to $100. Starbucks? Brooks Brothers? Toysrus if they have kids?

Any suggestions?

Here's what you should get them:

  • a Holiday bouquet of fresh roses, lilies, gerbera daisies from www.gifttree.com

  • a gift basket that includes two fine bottles of Merlot, fruit (crisp apples, oranges, kiwis), signature chocolates and a keepsake magazine tote

  • a "gift tower" of dizzying heights filled with favorites such as spearmint balls, lemon drops, peach slices, seasoned pretzels, McTavish cookies, chocolate hazelnuts, peanut brittle, pistachios, and blueberry cookie thins

  • two splits of Chandon California Brut Classic

This is definitely the time to do less. Sending a gift is a genuine but absolutely terrible idea. It might even make people second guess your understanding of business etiquette, corporate hierarchy, etc etc. Stick with the note
