I know this has probably been covered before, but I wanted some suggestions on how I can write an email to a VP who I didn't contact for a few months after I was rejected from a first round interview (I told him how the interview went, but never followed up). I was just not sure what to say and how to craft my email. Any suggestions on how I word my email just to say hello and see what's up. I appreciate the help

Do not just ask how he is doing and to catch up. You need to give him some substance otherwise you are wasting his time.
I usually provide a brief update of everything i've been up to (ex. internship offer, scholarship recipient, etc...)

the guy knows why your emailing. just be straight. "sir, i need a job"
more people should do this and stop beating around the bush. "girl, i want to have sex with you. yes or no. ok thanks next"

I have met this person at a career event last year, made a good impression and we spoke afterwards. We talked about work opportunities at his firm and he encouraged me to apply for some, but I ended up at other place. We also exchanged few friendly emails after that, but it was all like 10 months ago.
I want reach out to him again, and ask him something not related with those work opportunities - I am not looking like I need something from him etc.
I am just wondering what would be a good email opening line (I am not a native speaker) so when the things are a bit less formal but still formal, I am not sure how to go about it.
Would something like this be ok: Dear _,
I hope you are well. or I hope you are doing well. or I hope this email finds you well. or how?
Damn, my skills are poor, and I dont want to go straight to my question...
After that i would ask few things etc which is perfect.. but this first line is a pain for me.

Yea...or something like "Hope all is well?.." if in your last conversation with him you guys talked about something outside of work like an upcoming trip he was looking forward too or something...you could include that ex.."Hope all is well? How was your vac to ....?"
Then head straight to this point.
btw..if you start with Hello First Name ...in the USA, they are more informal compared to other regions.

How do I reconnect with an MD after a year of no contact? I interviewed at a boutique last year and got an offer but rejected it for a different firm. I'm looking for another summer internship this year and would like to ask this MD again but don't want to come off bad. Any advice how to structure an email or call?

Why not just e-mail him saying you'd like to reconnect and catch up? If its been a year of no contact he'll definitely ask you what you've been up to, and you can fill him in on things and mention that you're looking for internships again. It's not like he doesn't know why you're networking with him in the first place anyway.
