Freshman Programs
Hi there! :)
I am currently a Freshman at a large state school. I know GS, JPM, Barclays, and UBS have many freshman programs targeted toward minorities, which I am.
So I was wondering, when are the applications released to apply to these programs? Are there specific dates? How can I apply? Where do I find these applications?
Also, how difficult is it to secure a spot in one of the Freshman programs if you DO NOT attend a target?
Thanks!
Asians aren't considered minorities in the white collar labor force.
How do you know OP is Asian?
I'm not Asian, for the record.
Are there others who can help me out, please?
Thanks.
You can just go on the career websites. I think the applications are the same time frame as for summer analyst recruiting (don't remember specifically). They are held like in February-March. As with everything in banking positions are very difficult to get into as HR uses these programs to look at early prospects for internships. Also you probably have 0 work experience so resume screening takes into account high school achievements which do favor students from targets.
Just keep checking your career center postings. That's what I do (I go to a target too).
It depends on the bank for how much they value school "diversity". Barclays and J.P. Morgan are pretty big on bringing in kids from non-targets to their diversity programs, whereas at Morgan Stanley, there's actually less school diversity in the diversity programs than in the general programs.
JPM FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE PROGRAM (Originally Posted: 03/06/2009)
I was just wondering how many students actually get into this competitive program (in both IBD and S&T). Also, how many of these students are actually freshmen? I heard that the program is geared towards minorities. Is this true? Thank you so much for your replies.
I would also like to know about this. Anybody know?
Not sure about exact numbers but I don't think its geared towards minorities. Cause 3 kids from my target last year got it and 2 were caucasian. I've heard a number like 25-30 floating around but have never had confirmation and I have no clue about exact freshmen numbers.
I'm a freshman, and applied this year and got an interview. They told me that they were telling people after one round whether they were in or out.
I didn't make it. They told me up front that they were only looking for S&T, IB spots were already filled. I was only interested in IB. While I'm in touch with the interviewers, who told me to definitely apply for next year, apparently no freshman in new york (columbia and nyu) got one.
A friend at Berkeley reported the same situation. Or no freshmen from berkeley, either, I don't know about other places.
Wont specify the year, but I took part in this program. About 15-25 kids each year, split about evenly between banking and s&t. It's not geared toward minorities, as most of the kids are usually white ivy league kids. One freshman each year is what I've observed.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
No freshman made it in my super day (2 out of 9 or 10). There were only two minority groups represented, African American and Asian. I am not sure how many they picked either.
i go to a target and they gave out 8 interviews total. don't know how many got in
.
Do they ask technical questions or just fit/brainteasers? I mean, a freshman really doesn't know anything besides the real basics.
It was just frustrating because they told me they wouldn't be taking anyone for IB before the interview even started. I'm not sure why they even invited me, although they said they wanted to keep relations up with the school and encouraged applying next year.
Millhouse, I just had fit questions. For a couple of the people in S&T, I heard there were a few basic math ones, and one guy had a couple of broad questions on the markets. All easy, though.
There was a lot of "why finance given now", variations on "what are your strengths/weaknesses", and examples on working in a team. You get those everywhere though.
Accidental double post, edited.
Which firms have freshmen programs? (Originally Posted: 07/29/2013)
I know JPM is the only BB that has a full freshmen/sophomore summer program. Are there any well-known MM/boutique firms that offer official or unofficial summer programs for freshmen?
EDIT: Let me revise criteria. Looking for FRESHMEN programs for non-URM, non-LBGT students.
You're wrong right out of the gate. MS has the Bridging the Gap program for freshmen and the RBF program for sophomores. UBS has the President's Internship program for sophomores. BAML has a sophomore program. Citi has the Diversity Scholars program. Credit Suisse has the Douglas Paul program. GS takes sophomores into its summer analyst class regularly.
That info is actually gold!
@APAE: Great, thanks for that list. Too bad none of them are for freshmen, barring MS which is for URM and LBGT.
Check out JPM. They have a corp fin/IB internship for freshman

How hard is it to get this? For those rejected and accepted, what were your GPA, ECs, and work experience?
is this anything similar to the launching leaders program?
Pockethandkerchief, Yes.

i can tell you this program is virtually impossible to get into for freshman. class is usually around 20. virtually no freshman. and any sophomore that can get in this can just do normal recruiting.
PM me

For JPMorgan's freshman honors program,
Thanks
Is this a US-students-only program? My sister's a freshman at Imperial (uk) and would like to know.
I think it's an US/NYC only thing. the NYC location hosts a lot of early-start programs for younger ugrads and NYC-based college students. with that said, UK also has many, many, spring start programs that are non-existent in the US.
They typically take 20 kids, 5 freshman and the rest are sophomores. Participants come from a very diverse background. I'd say it is a semi URM program, but there are white kids too.
One unique feature of this program is that each school, whether it is HYP, Wharton or some no name state university, can only send a maximum of two students into the super day.
They used to have separate super days for target and non-target. More kids will be picked from the target school super day.
Does anyone know what is the most important criteria for selection of first round interviews? Is it school, gpa, or work experience (assuming a freshman who worked in BB in HS senior year).
The candidate is: 1. Target school 2. 3.6 GPA 3. Ex-BB asset management
SarahP, the deadline for the program has passed.
Since the deadline has passed, why are you worried about the 1st round selection criteria?
Are you able to pick any group you want if you stick with JP morgan?
anyone heard back or had interviews? post please!
