Interested in researching some of the top sell-side firms that specialize in energy sell-side research and management / strategy consulting (along the lines of Wood Mac). Would appreciate if those knowledgeable could share some names.

theres a few places like:
Opportune, Structure Group, Platts, PFC Energy
Is IHS considered a big name?

Hey all. I go to a non-target, and have practically have 0 alumni base in IB.
Good news is that Energy consulting firms do happen to recruit from my school. My question to all of you is: Is E consulting the real deal? Pay the same? Prestige? Hours? Ect...
Also, if I chose to do E consulting, would a degree in "energy commerce" be ideal? Or, a 'plain ole finance degree'?
Any input would be great!
.
Sorry for being so vague ... "Alternative Energy Consulting" is what OCR calls it, not sure if that helps. Also, I'd have to talk to somebody in my Career Services department at my college; they don't specify what companies come to OCR ... But, they do have a "Meet the Industry" type thing, and all of the energy companies you can think of come to that, Exxon, Conoco, BP, ect
Sounds like you go to Tech. Looking at the curriculum, it looks like there is almost zero finance & accounting required. If you're interested in banking/consulting, I would definitely go for a plain finance degree, and take some energy related courses for your electives. Those type of energy commerce majors almost always end up being landmen, so keep that in mind as you make your decision.
Oil & Gas consulting shops (Originally Posted: 03/21/2013)
Hi there, Have been trying to find energy/o&g focused consulting firms such as SBC or PFC but having a hard time finding more than a couple.
Are there more of them out there or is this segment really just that small? Which firms would you consider the top shops in this segment? How hard are they to get into with a background purely within finance?
Thanks
I can't think of many managment consulting firms to oil and gas.
There are a lot of firms that do consulting to oil and gas, but most of the consulting is on seismic interpretation, geophysical, e.g: technical stuff, which management consultants aren't typically suited to do.
Need to be a little bit more specific what type of consulting you are interested in... McKinsey, BCG, Bain all have oil and gas groups.
There are also strictly Energy focused shops like Wood Mackenzie. And as previously mentioned, there are a ton of technical consulting shops that have nothing to do with the Finance/Business side of the industry and solely do the technical part (geophysics, petrophysics, reservoir engineering, etc.)
Opportune, Structure Group, Wood Mackenzie
Wood mackenzie, Halliburton, schlumberger business consulting
booz is big oil and gas, too
.
Any intel on the Booz & Co, Deloitte, or BAH energy practices in DC? Any reason why these are all located there as opposed to Houston, and would that make them them 100% travel type jobs?
No idea about BAH.
But yeah, Deloitte (at least S&O) and Booz & Co are both M-Th travel.
Are they on the engrgy lobby parade?
Energy Consulting in Houston (Originally Posted: 05/20/2012)
Just inquiring about the names of any firms in Houston that specialize in energy. Attended school in the region for a BS in Finance and an MS in Energy Finance. Thanks
Schlumberger is probably the best known energy focused shop.
Truth be told, if you're in the Houston office of any major firm, you'll have a hard time doing anything but energy work.
Yeah probably not a great post upon review. I assume a good bit of the clients consultants work with, regardless of what kind of consulting they do, are energy focused companies.
